What to expect

Prepare for an adventure that takes in Tunisia's Roman roots and pirate past. You'll visit an amphitheatre to rival that of Rome with a tour of El Jem – an ancient colosseum where gladiator games once took place. Then, take to the waves for a swashbuckling afternoon at sea that includes swim stops, lunch and snacks aboard a replica pirate galley. This UNESCO World-Heritage site of El Jem is soaked in history. You'll be captivated by its stone-cut walls, fine-tuned archways and three-floor facade, a testament of glory to what was the Roman Empire. Take a seat in the age-old stadium and admire the arena below, just like they did in times gone by.Then, we'll cast off from Monastir harbour into the Mediterranean, just as the Barbary pirates did for centuries. But while they struck fear into European coastal communities as far afield as Iceland, we'll be going out to have wholehearted fun. There'll be stops to dive into the sea for swimming and plenty of time to dry off on-board while chillin' with water drinks and munching on snacks.

Great

The guide was very informative we learned alot about tunisia. It was a really great experience at the collaseum, having access to all areas was brilliant. The pirate ship was very good, only gripe was in the excursion details it does say you get soft drinks but only water was provided, my husband doesn't like water so I was thankful that I took a bottle of drink with us. There was alot of travelling involved, thankfully the bus had air-conditioning. We really enjoyed the day.

The tour spent first part visiting Roman colessuem, this was amazing! Sadly our time here was limited to an hour, which really wasn’t long enough to explore esp as there were local sellers out the outside selling beautiful goods which we never got time to look at. When this the sellers livelihood I’d have loved to buy something and support them. The pirate ship was laughable, felt like The Apprentice task! Tour guide really informative and interesting

Great

Pirate and Gladiators excursion overall a positive experience - Soft drinks are NOT included as indicated, you can get water aboard the boat for free but nothing more. - included lunch was good, good portion and nice food - upon arriving at the boat, the first thing naturally to do would be to go up the steps onto the top deck. Dont do this as there is a man aboard with a bird of prey who will demand money for photos. Make sure you take water from your hotel prior to departure

Gladiators: This was brilliant and a real highlight for my boys and I (aged 9, 10 and 15). Getting there early is perfect as it’s very very hot by 10am! El Jem itself is spectacular and a must see. The mosaic museum was interesting. Pirates: The boat itself is impressive but this experience was poor. The food was terrible, our drinks was water shared between guests out of one big bottle and the entertainment was naff plus they want tips. It was quick too. Our tour guide was amazing 5 *

I really enjoyed the coach journey as the guide was 10/10 informative. The amphitheatre was picturesque and we spent a lovely hour there. I didn’t, personally, enjoy the pirate not trip. We were lucky to be one of the first on and get some shade at the back of the top deck but most people were either in no shade upstairs or stuck downstairs where they couldn’t see any of the entertainment. Between entertainment there was ridiculously loud, very sweary inappropriate language for kids on board

Guide tried to hurry us through the Gladiator experience to go to a mosaic ‘museum’, which was not part of the original itinerary. Guide wasn’t available during the Coliseum visit and so we couldn’t ask any questions. Having provided info on gluten free diet ahead of the day, and checked twice with Tui reps my diet was not catered for. Food in general was very poor. Drinks on board were not included as advertised and very expensive. Whole pirate experience was lack lustre but the swimming good.

Great

The tour guide was wonderful, interesting tour of the colosseum and the mosaic museum. The boat trip was fun. Please adjust your description of the tour though as this was very inaccurate; the mosaic museum was not mentioned at all in the description and the description stated soft drinks were included-they were not.Only receiving 2 small plastic cups of water in an entire day out was incredibly dangerous especially for children. We found the sea swimming irratating on the skin with boat petrol.

Great

The ratings above are for El Jem. The pirate ship is not worth the money. It was disappointing that it sailed only a short distance to one stop, stayed there for a period of time and then sailed back. The shows on the ship were entertaining, but those who were asked to get involved were all young attractive women, whereas the target audience for a pirate ship surely should be children?! I booked on the trip for my 8 year old son, but it wasn’t something he would want to do again.

The amphitheatre is beautiful. I'd have liked more time there - we got 45 minutes to see one of the most incredible sites. The visit to see the mosaics in the museum was also amazing (and a nice surprise as it wasnt listed on the itinerary), but again there wasn't enough time to do them justice, or to see othe amazing house of Africa. The pirate boat trip was brilliant - along with the normal tour out, the crew put on a show that we all enjoyed, and I would definitely go again.

Great

Fantastic to see El Jem. Mohammed the guide was kind and gave a lot of information about Tunisia. The day was longer than expected. Almost 10 hours! The pirate boat was too long, especially with a long coach ride to get there. A little too much travel time. But El Jem is 2 hours but 30 minutes going around hotel pick ups and dropouts adds an extra hour. Pirate boat experience can be done in an hour and not 2 and a half.

The gladiator tour was really good, but the pirate boot experience was a little too simple. And also the food was bad

Excellent

It was an excellent tour, guide very imformative and easy to have a conversation with. The visit to the mosaic museum was interesting but I personally think if travelling with young children then either more tine at the ampitheatre or onboard the boat would be of more interest.
