You’ll get to know the city of Trier during this two-hour walking tour. It’s known as Germany’s oldest city and Roman ruins dating back as far as the 2nd century AD pop up at every turn. One of which is the Porta Nigra – a huge, impressively well-preserved gate that stands proudly in the city centre. Elsewhere, you’ll see the Roman bridge, straddling the Moselle River. Then there’s the amphitheatre, where grass banks now replace the seating areas where a 20,000-strong audience would have sat and watched gory gladiator battles. You’ll also get a bird’s-eye view of the ancient Roman Barbara Baths, thanks to an elevated walkway that’s strung across the top of them. Last but not least, and moving away from the Roman theme, there’s the Electoral Palace. This beautiful Rococco building has a bubblegum-pink façade and is fronted by manicured gardens filled with flowers, statues and fountains.
