You’ll get a speedy introduction to Breisach on this tour. This place was flattened by bombings during the Second World War, but you’d never know. It’s been painstakingly rebuilt to its former glory, with pastel houses, cobbled lanes and a grand cathedral. And that’s exactly where you’re heading today. St Stephen’s Cathedral sits right on top of a hill, which means the views are top-class. You can look out over the oh-so-romantic Rhine Valley and its vineyards, as well as the idyllic Black Forest. Inside the cathedral, meanwhile, you’ll find murals painted by Martin Schongauer – some of the largest of their kind to survive this side of the Alps. You’ll have some free time inside to explore under your own steam, before heading back to port.
