What to expect
Come and enjoy whale and dolphin sightings in Trincomalee Bay! Here, thanks to the deep sea canyon of the bay, they occur relatively closer to shore than in any other Sri Lankan destinations.
The Trincomalee area has rapidly become an important dolphin and whale-watching destination for two reasons: the frequent sightings of Humpback and Blue whales, and the discovery of several Sperm whales super pods of 50 members or more, which reside in these waters during the peak whale watching period between March and May.
You'll also have the opportunity to see dolphins, especially during the period between March/April and August/September. The main one is the Spinner dolphin, which plays, dances and shows off its acrobatic skills. Other dolphins that can be seen are Bottlenose and Fraser's dolphins.
