What to expect

Explore a small village in the south of the Heraklion's prefecture, Matala, located at the exit of a small valley and forming an enclosed bay with a nice view of the Paximadia islands.

After getting acquainted with your guide and following a short briefing, you'll head south through the plain of Messara, up to Matala, where you'll discover a 300-metre long sandy beach and crystal clear waters. On the north side of the beach, you'll also find a huge cave from the top of which people use to dive. You'll learn how this area is featured by many graves from the Roman and Christian era, as well as by several underwater caves, some with rooms, stairs, beds or windows, suggesting that they were once used as residences. Back in the 60's and 70's, hyppies have also found their paradise in Matala. After swimming at the beach, you'll have lunch in a traditional local tavern. At the end of the tour, you'll be driven back to your hotel or accomodation.
