Samos island was initially joined to the Asia Minor Coast, but became separated from the mainland following, enormous geological upheavals. According to the myth, it was the birthplace of goddess Hera, while in reality it is also the birthplace of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras. The island was colonized by the Ionians around the first millennium BC, while also Carians and Pelasgians inhabited it. Samos knew its greatest glory in the 6th century BC. Subsequently, the Persians dominated it during the Persian Wars, but later became a member of the Athenian Confederacy.
The island is the location of the joint UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Heraion of Samos and the Pythagoreion, which were inscribed in UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1992.
