What to expect

Come along on this wooden tent boat eight-hour journey through the waterways of the Commewijne district, known for its many historic plantations.

Admiring the white picturesque homes starts off the day as you travel via the Anton Drachtenweg, a wealthy neighborhood of Paramaribo, towards Leonsberg. Once there, you'll board your wooden tent boat to Fort Nieuw Amsterdam for a peek at the historic open-air museum. Hear the story of how the fort was built by Dutch settlers to protect the underlying plantations against the English and French.

This leads to exploring these green history-rich plantations such as the Rust and Werk plantation where you'll find a picturesque fishing village and the old colonial coffee and sugar plantations. After getting acquainted with the simple way of life of the offspring of the contract workers, the next stop is to the old coffee plantation Frederiksdorp. Here, admire how the buildings have been beautifully restored to now serve as hotel rooms and indulge in lunch. On the way back, seeing the Johanna and Margaretha plantation, which grows various crops, such as cassava, bananas and peppers completes the day.
