What to expect
If you're passionate about nature, flora and fauna – don't miss the chance to discover the pristine gardens of Jardin Tecina and its eco-friendly sustainable project, accompanied by a tasting opportunity.
Perched on a hilltop above the southern part of La Gomera, this well-known hotel resort is owned by the family of Norwegian shipping magnate Fred Olsen. Things get going with a scenic drive along the coast, stopping off at some great viewpoints along the way. One of the island's main attractions are its lush valleys, rocky mountains and sprawling greenery, and this orientation will give you a great introduction to the landscape. Once at Jardin Tecina you'll begin a relaxed walking tour through its Botanical Gardens which circle the bungalows of these much loved hotel gardens. You'll have the chance to identify and get to know more than fifty different species of plants from around the world – which are at their very best here thanks to the climate and soil of the island. Then, it's time to delve into the ‘Eco Finaca' – a sustainable project to care for the surrounding land. The plantings here are designed to make the most of natural resources, meaning no machinery is used which helps to protect the soil. Discover all the secrets of organic farming first-hand, including how the organic fertilizers, crop rotation and a variety of other techniques are used within the 9,500 square metre of land. You'll even find some delightful animals here, including ‘Margarita' the cow and her calf ‘Ferdinanda' – along with a variety of chickens, ewes and lambs. Rounding things off, you'll get to enjoy a tasting session of locally produced food from the eco plantation, including a selection of freshly-picked fruit, pastries and breads of the day, croissant sandwich with cheese and ham, assortment of soft drinks, infusions, milk and still mineral water to wash it all down. As you make your way back to the ship, you'll pass-by some more scenic views. A truly delightful experience!
