Maspalomas Sand Dunes and Puerto de Mogan Tour
Gran Canaria's south coast is home to one of the island's most precious natural attractions. You'll discover the sand dunes of Maspalomas and the charming town of Puerto de Mogan. Juana, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The dunes of Maspalomas are rumoured to be formed from sand blown over from the Sahara. But in fact, the combination of a receding sea in the last ice age and plenty of wind have created the huge sweep of dunes. The wind still shifts them around 3 metres per year.'Kick off with a visit to the Maspalomas sand dunes. There's time to take in the vast expanse of these natural sand hills from the viewpoint and snap some great pictures. Next, we'll pass by Puerto Rico and enjoy panoramic views from the route before arriving at pretty Puerto de Mogan, popularly known as the ‘Little Venice of Gran Canaria'. Juana explains, ‘The town got its nickname because of the canals, bridges and colourful houses that resemble the floating Italian city. It was built around a natural harbour that was once used as a fishing port.'In Puerto de Mogan, you'll have free time to explore streets flanked with cottages outlined in blue and yellow, spot wrought iron balconies and wander down flower-festooned lanes. It's the perfect introduction to the history, culture and laidback holiday vibe of this seaside village. Once you've had a look around, you could relax on the beach, stop for a drink at one of the harbourside bars overlooking the boats or browse the gift shops.

Tour its historic lanes and ancient cave dwellings, try local Basilicata food and wine, then choose to visit the cave house museum or a rupestrian church. Anna, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The cave houses of Matera were once considered a shameful place to live, best known for poverty, disease and crime. Nowadays, many caves have been transformed into chic homes, restaurants, and hotels.'Considered one of the most outstanding and intact troglodyte settlements, Matera's big draw are the ancient cave dwellings known as ‘sassi', which translates to ‘stones'. First up, we'll check out the baroque quarter, where churches and palaces are built on top of the caves. Next, we'll venture into the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso areas to see ancient sassi carved into the flanks of Gravina canyon. The dramatic setting overlooking the wild, rocky landscape is all part of the charm. You'll pause for thought in the old quarters, where inhabitants lived in squalor up until the 1950s, which was when the whole population of around 20,000 was rehoused. Wandering around today's visually arresting town, it seems hard to believe how tough life once was here. You'll also get to try typical food and wine at Lucany Restaurant, before choosing between an optional visit to the cave house museum or a rupestrian church, cut into the rock.

Mount Etna Sunset Tour with Sicilian Dinner
Watching the sky light up with shades of orange and then burn out into darkness while standing atop a volcano is a special sensation. This drama-rich tour takes you to Mount Etna – a must-visit when in Sicily. You'll head to an altitude of almost 3,000 metres to catch the sunset and then relax over a traditional meal to round off your adventure. Ciccio, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The volcano's name derives from the ancient Greek word “aitne”, meaning “I burn”. It's an appropriate name for Europe's most active volcano.' As part of a select group of no more than 25 guests, you'll go by minibus to Etna. As the terrain becomes rockier, we switch to a 4x4 vehicle. As we make our way to 2,900m above sea level – the highest point that's safely reachable – there'll be stops to take in the harsh, lunar landscape and the lava-smothered flanks of this towering mountain. Ciccio says, ‘You might wonder why so many people live on Etna's slopes. The answer is simple – volcanic soil is extremely fertile, and you'll see traditional crops like vines and citrus fruits, plus newcomers such as avocados and papaya growing here.'Make sure you're wearing comfortable walking shoes and warm layers – it gets cold at high altitude. After admiring the views from near the summit, an expert alpine guide will take you to a less exposed 2,500m, where you'll watch the sunset in a more comfortable location. Then on the way back, we'll stop at a chalet restaurant for a typical Sicilian dinner.
