Guided Visit to Corpus Christi Festival in La Orotava

Bursting with colour and lively with locals, the Corpus Christi festival in La Orotava is one of Tenerife's most celebrated events. Age-old traditions and vibrant artistry bring this small town to life every year for this famous festival which transforms the town into an artist's canvas. Many streets and squares are decorated with pavement murals created with sand and flowers. Laura, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Designing and making the sand carpets take huge skill and patience, and every grain you see is collected and sprinkled into place by hand.' Known as one of the most spectacular events in Tenerife, this festival is a true feast for the senses. For this occasion, every year the intricate sand paintings are carefully ‘drawn' by the artists who spread the sand using their hands. The centrepiece is a huge sand carpet with a religious theme, laid out in painstaking detail according to ancient tradition, using a variety of coloured lava sand from the craters of the Cañadas.
