Watching the sunrise from the top of one of Madeira's highest peaks will have you reaching for your camera over and over again. And this exclusive morning trip to Pico do Arieiro promises just that – views over Madeira during the mystical first light of the day, followed by a warming breakfast. Arlindo, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘You may wonder why we plan to drive to the peak a while before the sun is due to rise. You'll see when you get there that the best colours light up the sky during the half-hour before the sun appears.'You'll want to pack warm layers, a hat, gloves and scarf for this morning tour, as the temperature can often be up to 10 degrees lower at the top of Pico do Arieiro than at the coast. We'll set off early, with a pre-dawn pick-up from your hotel – this is to ensure you can reach the top in time to find a good viewpoint for the chance to watch the sun bathe the island of Madeira in golden light. Often, clouds sit below the Pico do Arieiro, making the sunrise views even more magical.Coffee will be served as you're taking it all in and enjoying the moment in the midst of mountains and clouds. Afterwards, you'll head along to a restaurant for a tasty breakfast. Arlindo adds, ‘It can get very cold on the Pico do Arieiro, sometimes it even snows there. My parents used to drive us up here if there was snow at the peak. The local tradition was to build a snowman on the bonnet of the car before driving back down again.'

Top: Sonnenaufgang, Flop: das Frühstück war lecker, aber man hätte es an einem besseren Ort einnehmen können. Z.B. direkt auf dem Pico. Ansonsten wären es nur noch 20min gewesen und wir hätten unser Frühstück im hotel noch bekommen. Auf das Frühstück hätte ich verzichten können.

Der Ausflug, auf den Berg insgesamt, war super. Dadurch, daß wir mit dem Bus hoch fuhren, mussten wir nicht allzu weit laufen. Es waren enorm viele Leute auf dem Berg, was sich allerdings gut verteilte. Unser Reiseführer hat sich wirklich sehr bemüht und hatte Decken und Kaffee für uns dabei. Die Aussicht und der Sonnenaufgang waren grandios, wenn es auch sehr windig und kalt war, aber das wurde zuvor ja auch mitgeteilt, dass es entsprechend kalt sein kann. Das Frühstück war nicht mein Fall.

The sunrise itself is spectacular, we were lucky with the weather. What I was surprised at was the number of people there , looking for that tic tok /, Instagram shot...and with several drones too that sort of spoilt the magic of the moment. We were collected on time and can't fault driver/guide . Good breakfast after at restaurant on way down. The sunrise is superb , and worth the 5am get up for.

Sunrise over Pico do Arieiro was an amazing experience, we loved it and our driver/guide was fabulous. He was friendly, professional and drove safely. Coffee and blankets were provided but fortunately it wasn't that cold during our visit. Would highly recommend this trip.

Koffie van de gids bij aankomst was top. Ook dat hij dekentjes bij zich had tegen de kou. Ontbijt was zeer minimaal. Sla dat maar over. Je bent op tijd terug in het hotel, zodat je daar nog kunt ontbijten.

Prompt collection, friendly driver. Got us to where we needed to be before it got too busy. The sunrise was spectacular, I only wish I owned a better camera. Coffee and breakfast was good, it was only a small breakfast but was back at the hotel on time for a 2nd one! Al in all a very memorable trip and worth every penny.

Helaas de pech dat het zwaar bewolkt was en regende en dus geen zonsopgang te zien was Dit was eigenlijk al duidelijk vanaf de start dat het weer niet mee zou werken Je weet dat dit op Madeira kan gebeuren maar er is geen plan B Zonsopgang om 7.00 uur waren daar om half 7 en vervolgens tot 8.00 uur moeten wachten tot het restaurant open ging en we het ontbijt konden nuttigen We hebben als koppel € 104,00 betaald dan zou ik deze excursie niet boeken en ter plaatse kijken wat er mogelijk is

Abholung hat super geklappt, mit einem guten Fahrer und nach drei, vier anderen Hotels, ging es hoch zum Pico. Oben am Berg an allen Mietwagenfahrern vorbei… näher ran ging nicht. Total tollen Blick gehabt und anschließend ein paar Kilometer entfernt, ein schönes, lokales Frühstück ein einem netten lokal genossen… nur zu empfehlen, insb. ohne eigenem Wagen… oben kassierte die Polizei einige ab…

Ich finde das man das Frühstück weglassen kann. Da man das ja im Hotel bekommt. Und so 1 Stunde mehr vom Tag hätte. Dadurch könnte man den Ausflug etwas günstiger anbieten

De zonsopgang was spectaculair. Is populair dus veel andere toeristen. Toch kun je wel een plek vinden om te genieten van het uitzicht. Zorg dat je voldoende warm gekleed bent. Het is koud zo vroeg in de morgen en op die hoogte. Gids had dekentjes bij zich en warme koffie om te starten. Dat was top. Gids was niet heel spraakzaam. Na afloop ontbijt was lekker en uitgebreid. Zeer goed verzorgd.

Unfortunately, it was very cloudy and we were unable to see the sunrise. Personally, i think locals would know whether you would be able to seethe sunrise and the trip should be cancelled if it is unlikely or rescheduled. The pick up was punctual and driver drove well up to the mountain. Only coffee offered and not tea. Breakfast was a mixture of hot and continental which was fine. Overall expensive for what it was.

Ondanks bewolking heb ik genoten van de trip. Stipt op tijd werd ik op gehaald. Daarna maar een volgende stop. Een vriendelijke gids die voldoende informatie gaf en bekend was met de trip. Het ontbijt was in een sfeervol restaurant en smaakte goed.

Das Timing war optimal, super tolle Sonnenauffangsposition, früh aufstehen lohnte sich. Frühstück würde ich aus dem Angebot nehmen, da es im Hotel eines inkl. und besseres gibt, oder alternativ was direkt am Aussichtspunkt ausgeben.

Wij hebben geen zonsopgang gezien. Alles zat blijkbaar in de wolken. De chauffeur van het minibusje heeft nog even gewacht. Helaas zonder gunstig gevolg. SUNRISE OVER PICO DO ARIEIRO zat letterlijk in de wolken.

The excursion was in mid April and we arrived about an 50 minutes before sunrise, which was a bit long standing when it was only 7 deg C (we are warned to wear warm clothes) and were left at top of the Mountain on a concrete platform next to a radio mast and an automatic weather station. Thought may be only needed 30 mins. On return to the transport after sunrise you understand why to get the best spot for people and parking as there were hundreds on the mountain and parking was chaotic.

Je koopt een transfer naar boven, de reisleiding voelt zich niet geroepen iets te vertellen over de omgeving. Het ontbijt is echt heel slecht, de toiletten zijn nog vies van de vorige dag, het stinkt verschrikkelijk. Ik had dit al gelezen in de recensies, maar het is echt waar. Schrap dat ontbijt daar en zoek geschikte reisgidsen.

I’d suggest to advise participants to bring a torch if possible, to prepare for walking around in the darkness after getting off the mini bus. Most people used the torch on their mobile phone to light up the steps ahead. The drivers were attentive and professional. They several us a small coffee and a fleece blanket each which weren’t expected.

Der Sonnenaufgang über den Wolken war atemberaubend. Es war traumhaft zu sehen wie die Sonne alles zum strahlen bringt und die Berge gegenüber von der Sonne ihre volle Gestallt zeigen. Das Essen danach war gut, kleine Auswahl, man ist satt geworden.

Op tijd opgehaald. Gids bracht ons naar het punt vanwaar je de zonsopgang kon zien. In het donker heb je er geen idee van hoeveel mensen er staan. En dan: de zon. Wat een ervaring. Terwijl je zon als heel normaal ervaart is het toch heel speciaal dit mee te maken. Ontbijt erna was prima. Weer veilig teruggebracht.

Everybody should understand that you are on a mountain in the dark! Listen to your guide it’s his job to make sure you’d safe But the position he guided us too was absolutely spot on! Be back at the bus when your told not 15mins later as your breakfast was timed to be ready You’re responsible for you! And the people your with you

Abholung und Betreuung waren hervorragend. Einzige kleine Kritikpunkte waren einmal das der Aufenthalt nach dem Sonnenaufgang durchaus 30min länger sein sollte und auch die Zeit für das Frühstück ist zu kurz bemessen, man kann nicht innerhalb einer halben Stunde das Frühstück reinschlingen und es dann auch noch genießen. Hier sollte der Aufenthalt in der Gaststätte auf 90min verlängert werden.

Loved this experience! The beauty and landscape of Pico is stunning. Definitely worth the 5am wake up call... Our driver was prompt, polite and ensured our little group was looked after. We got to spend a hour up the mountain, it's very cold so bring a jacket and a hat.

Unique experience watching sunrise above the clouds. A lovely driver collected us and took us to the peak. After watching this we were taken for breakfast before being brought back to hotel. Loved everything and would highly recommend. Was told it was cold at the top but we’re from Scotland and it was mildly breezy so take a sweatshirt or long sleeves

Prachtig om de kleuren van de zonopkomst te zien vanaf de pico Arieiro. We werden vroeg opgehaald zodat je een goede plek kunt kiezen op het moment dat de zon opkomt voor de drukte. De chauffeur reed op een veilige manier. Koffie en een dekentje was geregeld. Het ontbijt was goed. Kleed je warm, in juni bij goed weer was het rond 5:30 u 7 graden C.

De zonsopgang is werkelijk prachtig om te zien. Ze zorgen ervoor dat je ruim voor alle andere aanwezig bent op berg zodat je het beste plekje kunt kiezen. Ontbijt is goed en niets op aan te merken. De prijs van de activiteit is misschien wat aan de te dure kant, echter krijg je er een beeldschoon uitzicht voor terug.

De zonsopgang was niet zichtbaar, hier kan uiteraard niemand iets aan doen. Maar de gids/leiding ging niet mee met ond vanaf de bus. We werden zelf met veel te kleine zaklampjes de pico opgestuurd. Hier is geen hekje dus terwijl het pikdonker was was dit best spannend. Het ontbijt viel erg tegen. Al met al zou ik aanraden zelf naar de top te rijden.

Koffie boven op de Pico is niet verteld waar die was. Ontbijt na de zonsopkomst was verschrikkelijk slecht: koffie smaakte totaal niet, was lauw en leek mix van koffie met thee met suiker! Broodjes hard en oud, omelet vies en leek oude grijze stukken tussen te zitten, jus d’orange smaakte meer naar water dan naar sinaasappel. Kortom, al het ontbijt laten staan en bij terugkomst nog de eerste koffie met ontbijt moeten eten, dat was flinke tegenvaller!! Het uitzicht was natuurlijk overweldigend.

De zonsopgang helaas door de laaghangende bewolking niet heel bijzonder. Je moet niet denken dat je de enige bent die dit doet want je bent met velen. Omdat we de eerste ter plekke waren was het wel grappig om de anderen te zien komen. Chauffeur was vriendelijk, deed zijn werk en was behulpzaam bij het uitdelen van de evt dekens maar verder geen toelichting onderweg noch heen noch terug. Het ontbijt in het restaurant in Poiso was basic maar prima. Toiletten in t restaurant waren vies.

We waren als eerste bij pico. Dus mooi plekje gevonden om de zonsopkomst te bekijken. Het nadeel was dat we wel een uur moesten wachten en het was ijskoud. Goede tip warm aankleden. Na de zonsopkomst kregen we bij een restaurant een ontbijt was erg lekker en genoeg keuze.

De dag begint vroeg, na een rit van ongeveer drie kwartier parkeert de bus bij Pico Areeiro. In de verte zijn de eerste kleuren van de zonsopkomst stiekem al te zien. Samen loop je zo'n 5 minuten naar het uitkijkpunt, waar al snel iedereen stil valt. Wat een prachtige, onvergetelijke ervaring!

De zonsopkomst is geweldig, je bent echt boven de wolken en maakt (bij optimaal weer) alles mee. Het aansluitende ontbijt viel ons wel erg tegen, de plek was niet mooi (zonder enig uitzicht) en het eten was erg simpel / armoedig. Het zou volgens de site op een locatie met een mooi uitzicht zijn.
