What to expect
Step out of ancient Egypt and into the modern heart of the city – downtown Cairo. This guided walking tour will show you the best parts of the city’s downtown area with Nile views, monuments, parks, and some warm Egyptian sunshine. Walaa, one of our local guides, says, ‘Every corner in Cairo is steeped in history and culture and this tour gives you a 360° perspective of the city – including a real taste of local Egyptian food and hibiscus tea.’
After you’ve met your guide, the tour kicks off through the city’s green gem, Gezira Land, nestled next to the imposing Cairo Tower. Next, cross the historic Qasr El Nile Bridge over the Nile towards Tahrir Square. Pause at the Nile Cornice – it’s a popular spot to see couples and traditional felucca boats. Here, you’ll stop to try some local food including grilled fresh corn, sweet potato and Egyptian bread mixed with Doqqa salt, ‘the flavours are unforgettable’, adds local guide Walaa.
Tahrir Square is next on the cards. Snap some shots of the obelisk centrepiece and sphinx statues before strolling past the American University and along Talaat Harb Street and Champollion Street. ‘This street is named after the French Egyptologist Jean-François Champollion who became the first person to decipher Hieroglyphics’, says our local guide. Continue taking in the sights and atmosphere of Cairo until your tour comes to an end at the Tahrir Square Fountain, leaving you free to continue exploring or return to your hotel.
