What to expect

The desert sands of Tunisia are sprinkled with Hollywood stardust. This two-day tour takes you to some of the country's top filming locations. You'll visit ancient Roman ruins and underground houses, cross a vast salt lake and spend the night in an oasis on the fringes of the Sahara. Hamdi, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Luke Skywalker's home is in Matmata, a cave village where the houses are hollowed out of the rock. The sandstone is soft enough to dig deep pits, and then dig out caves around the edge, to form the underground rooms. Each room opens onto the base of the pit, which becomes a central courtyard.'Begin your desert adventure at El Jem Colosseum. This ancient Roman stadium used to seat 35,000 spectators, entertained by gladiatorial fights and chariot races. After your cultural fix, head to Matmata, for lunch and a visit to the rock-cut cave homes that starred in the Star Wars films. Finish the day in your very own oasis for an overnight stay in Douz, the ‘Gateway to the Sahara'.In the morning, you'll cross Chott el Djerid, a rust-washed salt lake, before hopping into a 4x4 for a ride to Onk Jemal. Here, you'll explore a film set city built exclusively for Star Wars. After stopping for a Tunisian lunch at Gafsa, you'll round off the tour with a photo stop at historic Kairouan. You won't be able to resist taking lots of pics of the richly decorative mosques that give the town an abundance of character.

Great

Overall, an amazing 2 days where I saw things I would never have been able to experience without this trip. The amazing camel ride in the Sahara and the watching the sunrise over one of the great salt lakes are 2 of the most wonderful memories. The overnight hotel was not great and seemed to be a money trap for the guests. I also didn't like that the guide told us where to buy things he said we needed and we ended up paying more than necessary, A lot of unavoidable travelling but worth it.

It was all fabulous and such good value. Our guide Fares was amazing, so knowledgeable and helpful, everything went very smoothly. The 4WD desert experience was such fun! Some people asked about extra costs - non optional was the hotel tax of 12TD each (really should have been added to the trip cost). Optional activities - quad biking (45 mins) was 80TD single, 100TD double, camel rides or horse carriage was 40TD each. Also money for drinks at meals and coffee stops, and tips for the guide etc.

Great

We had a good trip overall. The hotel in Douz was cold. The restaurant suffered from this and the cold plates meant the food went cold quickly. The bar was too cold to sit in for very long and the rooms were marginally warmer. The itinerary was good - we enjoyed all the experiences offered. We felt that we had to pay for the camel ride (or the horse cart ride that I would rather have participated in but didn’t realise was an alternative) so this should be included in the price of the trip.

The guide Aida was so helpful, knowledgeable and patient. the driver was good too. The transfers were smoothly operated. There was enough time at each place. The food was good. The Sahara jeep experience was not as good as usual as the driver didn’t interact and he drove very slowly so it wasn’t much fun, jeep 3.

Great

The trip itself did feel a bit rushed. With the long journey times, could have done with a more comfortable coach because it did feel cramped and it was hard to stay comfortable but there we’re enough stops along the way to help but still needs a more spacious coach. Need to bit a bit more clearer on pricing for the trips optional. example knowing the camel rides optional is ok but knowing the price would be 40 dinar would have been better. All in all for a two day trip there’s room to improve.

Great

This trip is an affordable option for experiencing the Sahara desert, but be warned that there is a LOT of travelling. The coach takes the slow roads to avoid tolls and total travel time was almost 17 hours over 2 days. Excellent value for money, nice hotel (Hotel Mehari Douz) good food, but you don’t get to see the towns that you stop in, only taken to tourist trap shops and that’s it. The desert 4x4 was so much fun and great to see the Star Wars film set. Very early starts both days.

Mohammed, our guide, was amazing! So much knowledge, we learnt so much about each region and the wider culture of Tunisia. It was quite frustrating to have to hear the instructions three times, especially when we booked and English your and there was a separate option for a German tour (would've been one less language)

Early mornings and a lot of travelling but it’s worth it! Plenty of toilet & snack breaks. The food included in the excursion was really yummy and the hotel you stay in overnight was very basic, not the nicest or cleanest but the food there was good. Great value for money and recommend it to everybody! The driver and guide were really nice and knowledgeable. The only thing we didn't like is the carpet sales pitch disguised as seeing the mosque.

The big ticket items, the camel trail and the jeep safari were with excellent, largely day 1 was very good but day 2 started with the salt flats in an area that half of the group couldn't access and the final stop, the Mosque at Kairoane, well that wasn't really what it was at all, it was about trying to sell the group carpets, the Mosque was a few buildings away and even though we couldn't go inside, we knew this as it is inaccessible to non Muslims in the afternoon, the trip was all about buy

Great

On the whole the trip was excellent, but could have been a lot better. The main issue is the amount of time spent on the coach. Although much of this unavoidable, some is. After a brief stop at El Jem ( should have been a bit longer), we diverted off the most direct route to the lunch stop for a 15 minute rest stop. This diversion and 15 minute stop added close to two hours to the trip. Very poor organisation. Could write more, will have to leave to reviews

The early wake-up calls and long coach journeys aside (!), we covered so much in the two days - it was brilliant. From the coliseum at El Jem and the camel riding to the Star Wars themed stop-offs, everything was so well planned and really enjoyable. Our tour guide, Mohammed, was so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The food on the whole was very good, although more clarity over how much extra money would have been helpful. Overall though, it was brilliant. Memories to last a lifetime!

Everything about this trip was amazing, yes there is a lot of travel involved, but thats required in order to get out and see the country! Our guide Adrian was absolutely amazing, very knowledgeable and friendly, and really made the trip special. The sights on this trip are excellent, the camel rides in the Sahara are not something that you do every day and well worth a go. The Sahara jeep safari was awesome, but all in all this trip is a wonderful set of memories for life. Thank you!

Overall the trip was great value for money and we enjoyed the trip. Our favourite part was the camel ride, the jeep journey through the desert and seeing the Star Wars set. All lived up to expectation. Our guide was fantastic, had good knowledge of the places we visited and a great sense of humour. Only downside was the lunch on the second day- too early and very poor quality.

We enjoyed the experience, the coach stopped regularly for breaks or sites, Mohammed our guide was amazing, keeping us all informed on local traditions, history and information. He also was helpful about the best places to buy local goods for fair prices. The hotel in Douz was fantastic with a pool to cool off after the hot day. The extra experiences were fantastic, Camel riding and quad biking were well organised. I thoroughly recommend this trip, to see the main sites around the area.

Thoroughly enjoyed jeep safari, camel ride & seeing star Wars sets. Hotel meal on day 2 was lovely. Didn't like thd coach. A struggling a bit and we saw other newer coaches fitted with WiFi and USB ports which ours didn't have. Also didn't like that on Day 2 some people decided to change seats on the coach leaving my family of 5 split in to 3 and thus no way to communicate. My wife ended up cramped in the back row with no leg room, heat from engine, min. AC and ended up having an Asthma attack

Enjoyed all parts of the 2 day experience. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The salt lake was a bit of a disappointment as we thought we'd be driving on in not a road going through it. The driver was very good. The jeep safari people were excellent. It was disappointing having to pay for drinks when we had a meal and had to pay the hotel tax. Maybe they could be included in the price of the overall trip?

If you are chilling in a resort and just want to be carried around on a bus to the desert to say that you've been there, this might be for you. However, if you want to have an authentic experience and truly experience the desert and south of Tunisia, we wouldn't recommend this, as it is basically a glorified bus trip, where we stop for 10 minutes to take some pictures and continue. I wish the desert trip were more in-depth and as a backpacker and adventurer I was left wanting more.

We loved this trip to bits, we had the best tour guide Mohammed who kept us informative and busy whole trip. However it is a long trip so get ready to spend some time in the bus. The only suggestion would be it’s to get more free time at each object of interest and less time for shopping at your dedicated carpet shop. You get only around 20min at each object but an hour and a half at the shop!

Fantastic 2 days. Our guide Lotfi was incredibly knowledgable and provided interesting facts and information in a really engaging relatable way and I couldn’t wait to hear what he was saying. The Ampitheatre was awesome, loved all the Star Wars parts, enjoyed the Trogolyte visit and horse and cart. I would say the hotel we stayed at wasn’t the best food was poor and room very basic, the journey home was long and would have been happier to drive straight home and not visit the mosque. This was an affordable, extremely well organised and phenomenal trip. Oncenin a lifetime that I hope to do in Novemeber again. The coach was airy, cool andnhad chargers on every seat. There were ample stops along the way for stretching legs etc, and the sights andnviews and Star Wars elements were of my childhood. The jeep safari, the camel trek and the hotel in the Oasis were amazing. Did not appreciate the hustle at the carpet factory on the way home though. Left a bad taste.

The two day sahara tour is excellent value for money and use of time to see as much as possible. Guide (Ali) and driver (Tariq) both cool guys with great knowledge. Well paced, felt very looked after. Quads and watching the sunrise were my highlights. Did not like seeing camels used for entertainment of people, especially as they were roped together by rings pierced through their noses and in obvious discomfort. Special mentions to both the coach driver over the two days, Bushka and also our knowledgeable tour guide, Lofte (please forgive my spellings of the names), what they didn’t know about the area wasn’t worth knowing. We have been on many trips over the years, and we’ve never seen a driver interact with everyone as much as Bushka did over the two days. His photographs and ideas were amazing!

Sunrise above salt lake was stunning. You could prompt customers to take swimming suits, we took ours by pure chance. Juggling two languages by a guide was a bit distracting. You shouldn't advertise Kairouan as additional experience if it's only seeing mosque from top of the souvenir centre without visiting city itself.

Whatever you do, don't give them money. Children also did this,I've seen one running whit one holding it by it's neck, poor thing was screaming so bad,I cried for days after

Amazing experience. Be prepared for a very early start both days. The guide was very informative and answered any questions we had. We had regular rest breaks for the loo and drinks. Make sure you take enough as you will be needing a lot of water! Plenty of photo opportunities. even stopping for sunrise photos. We didn't do the camel ride but my son and husband did the quad bikes that was 90 for the both of them. The jeep ride over the Sahara and salt lake stunning! Highly recommended

My wife and I had done this trip 20 years ago We enjoyed it so much we decided to revisit with our two boys, one 8 and the other 14 years old. They are both star wars fans so we know they would enjoy the trip. Day one’s time on the bus was just right however day two didn’t have enough interesting stops and the time on the bus was too long The 4x4 and visit to start wars Mos espa set was the highlight of our tour. However I think the trip should take 3 days

Great

The first day was very good, informative and fun. the dissapointment was the hotel and the food, the room we were allocated had no plugs in the sink, nothing to hold the shower head also the water was salty. we arrived @approx 19:10 hous to be told that food would be ready in the restaurant @ 19:30, also we were required to pay tax at the hotel. 04:00 start is not mentioned when booking, due to multiple stops after the 4x4 we missed the opportunity getting into the Mosque

Great

Guide was more focused on stops to generate money for local business. When tour finished he was more focused on his tip which he announce about over the microphone on bus- both myself and wife were going to tip but to announce on bus was unprofessional. Overnight hotel was ok but air conditioning poured out hot air and never cooled - room temp was 30 degrees Thought we could have learn more about history of Tunisia and mosque visit was disappointing Sahara 4x4 and salt lake sunrise fab

Second day was too much travelling , would have been better to have got back quicker and missed the last stop as it was so hot. Such amazing experiences though throughout and the guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly!

Great sites, loved the jeep safari and camel ride. Hotel quite dated. Itinerary a little sketchy prior to booking.

Average

Star wars bit was very good and camel riding. Everywhere else, including stops for "lunch" which was included. We were bombarded by waiters pretending to be polite only to demand tips all the time. Also deliberately stopping in expensive tourist shops for "coffee and wc" . The hotel we stayed at for the overnight stay. You get constantly harrassed by staff offering you drinks all the time. But they are like £8.00 for a whiskey and coke. And beer was super expensive too.

Absolutely amazing experience! Cannot fault it at all, loads of places to see and information to learn. The guide, Mohammed, was incredibly helpful and was open to all questions and support. There are a few optional extras available through the trip including camel rides and/or quad bikes but you don't have to do these if you don't want to or can't afford it.

Great

Great tour and great value for money !!!!! Mohamed and Salem very lovely and helpful. We were given lots of information and useful advices! A few comments to improve: we didnt stop at Oasis to take pictures, we could only take them while in the bus. The 4x4 Sahara trip, we were in people carrers - 6 of us +driver, smaller groups would be better. Ong Jemel, 'the neck of the camel'- we saw it only from very far. We dint visit traditional Tunesian markets, we were sent to gift shops instead.

The trip is excellent value for money and you get to see the real Tunisia. I would have preferred a choice of food for lunch as the set menus were repetitive. Apart from that a fantastic experience (my 2nd in 10 years)

The guides are great. Have stuff to read or watch as you spend a lot of time on the coach There was nothing on the tour that I would say was poor. The 4x4 on the desert was probably the best alongside the quad bikes (60 dinar). The hotel room was pretty ropey and 4am wake up challenging. Great VFM

The trip was very nice. Our guide gave us loads of information and made everything very interesting, also we had enough time to enjoy each stop and mostly the overnight in sahara. Definitely worth every penny

Mysle ze po dotarciu na Sahare pierwszego dnia, przejazdzka wielbladem, bryczka lub quadem powinna byc w cenie. Przynajmniej jedna z tych atrakcji. Inaczej ludzie którzy sie nie zdecydowali doplacac w rezultacie sie nudza i czekaja ponad godzine az Ci którzy poszli jezdzic po pustyni, wróca. My wybralismy wielblady oraz quady. Bylo niesamowicie. 20 minut w Mos Espa to stanowczo za malo przy ciagle atakujacych sprzedawcach lokalnych pamiatek. Rajd 4x4, przewodnik, jedzenie super!

Value for money. Interesting places to visit. Negatives.... Hotel at Sahara not great, food not great, tatty rooms. Bus had a blow out which the driver was totally unaware of, even though the bus was vibrating badly.

Definitely value for money for everything we saw and did. The hotel and meals were great and the sights too. It would've been good to have included drinks in the meals though, even water had to be paid for which is a bit mean I thought. Luckily I read reviews previously, so knew there would be lots of driving, but was ok. Early morning for sunrise was worth it. Guide was very knowledgeable and helpful, learnt quite a bit on the tour. Humbling to see the cave dwellers. Sahara sunset magical.
