What to expect

After being picked up in Reykjavík you'll travel to the West to the historic area of Borgarfjorður – the region that has been the setting for most of the Icelandic sagas. First, you’ll visit Deildartunguhver – the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Next, you'll be taken to see the great Hraunfossar, a series of stunning waterfalls. The waters flow out of the lava field Hallmundarhraun and the Hraunfossar are very often called “Lava Waterfalls”. The Rivulets that stream from the lava field create one of the most breath-taking views in Iceland. A short walk through the many viewing points and platforms here brings us to another beautiful waterfall, but this is one with a tragic tale to tell. This is Barnafoss, or "the waterfall of the children". The highlight of the tour is the visit to the Vidgelmir Lava Cave, just shy of 1600 meters deep and one of the largest in Iceland. It features amazing colors and lava formations that lurk in the depths of the earth and stunning lava stalactites and stalagmites. This 90-minute-long expedition into the most extensive lava caves in the country will amaze you, giving you a real sense of the power and scale of these volcanic eruptions, all in the expert hands of knowledgeable guides who will tell you much more about the geological features here. After nearly 2 hours spent deep below the surface of the Earth, we will end our tour in the woodland oasis of Husafell. Husafell is a magical place to unwind after a day of wonder, with birch tree woodlands, waterfalls, rugged lava fields, crystal-clear water springs, medieval remains and much more to see. Once the visit to the natural wonders of Iceland is over, you'll head to Reykholt historic site. Here you'll learn a bit about the history of Iceland and you'll get to see Snorralaug – a small hot spring used by local people since 12th century.

Excellent

Although booked through TUI, the tour was provided by another company, Nice Travel, and would have been cheaper booking direct. However, Nice travel were excellent. Their guide, Christina, was a wealthy of knowledge, entertaining and fun, she made the whole day so enjoyable and memorable. We cannot recommend her highly enough. A perfect day.

Great

Interesting tour, especially the lava caves, and it was good to be shown round by an actual geologist. Well run by NiceTours Iceland (not run by TUI)
