What to expect

Strolling through Nessebar is perhaps the most culturally enriching experience on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. This headland, known as the ‘Pearl of the Black Sea', is only slightly larger than the Vatican City yet has many more churches. Ivaylo, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Nessebar is a living museum – there are monuments here that were built as far back as the 5th century. Due to its strategic location, the town has always been a busy merchant hub. This is why it was here, over 2,500 years ago, that money was invented and first used for trade.'You'll begin with a guided walking tour of the old town, which is crammed onto a narrow peninsula jutting out into the Black Sea. Historians know that there's been a town here for 3,200 years, making it among Europe's oldest. There's so much history packed into the old town that Nessebar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Relics from the second millennium BC, from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages have been unearthed. There's evidence here that reflects the architectural progress of the whole Balkan and East Mediterranean regions.Winding streets and alleys fringed with characterful timber homes lead you to more than 40 churches dating back as far as Byzantine times. There's also some free time to explore the town on your own, soak up the scenery on a seaside stroll or browse for souvenirs.

From start to finish our guide was very informative of the history of not just Nessebar but the surrounding area of Sunny beach. & further afield. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting. Only downside to this was we wish we had more time to look around after the initial tour.

Excellent tour, Ivaljo was our tour guide and he was extremely knowledgeable as well as funny too! Not only was he able to tell us interesting information about the place, he also offered key tourist information for keeping safe. The journey to Nessebar was quick, bus was not too hot, which was a relief. Highly recommend this trip to Nessebar.

The tour was well balanced. There was lots of useful information but not too much. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable & spoke very good English. The amount of free time was perfect. i wouldn’t change anything.

Great

Very nice guide although not much walking and not as informative as could have been. Often referring to other points not about Nessebar. Would have preferred more walking around. Stop at resturant unnecessary snd waisted time

Bonus before we got to Nesebar. We were taken to Khans Tent for the amazing views over Sunny Beach and Nesebar in the distance. There we were given a little complimentary drink as well. Next stop was Nesebar itself. Brilliant guide took us around. The architecture was very interesting. One little surprise the guide took us to an Aladdin's cave where we were given some lovely tea to try and which you could buy if you liked. We then had 2hrs free time to look around ourselves which soon went.

Lovely little trip for half the day and £21 is a great price. Plenty of bars, café and restaurants to choose from, beautiful buildings and the museum is worth a visit too if you're into history and architecture. There's a tiny little gemstone crystal shop and the prices are amazing! All in all I'd recommend it. I didn't bother with the tour guide once I got to Nessebar as I like to do my own thing. But the price to get there and back alone straight to and from the hotel is worth it.

Although the guide was knowledgeable, he spent too much time on the subject and it became repetitive & boring. You couldn’t really hear what he was saying so an intercom system what have been useful. A map with all the various ruins / sites would have been useful.

The trip is great for getting to know the local place of Nessebar and the right amount of time half a day. The tour guide was great. However it should be made know to bring something to cover your shoulders.

The tour was great - informative and interesting. The only slightly tricky thing was that the streets are often cobbled, and our 1-year-old's buggy found those cobbles quite challenging! But apart from that the tour was great - would definitely recommend.

Guide was approachable and knowledgeable but we didn't really do much by way of walking. Directions on how to get to our pick up point were non existent (no rep at the hotel although he was happy to sell excursions over the phone while clarifying he wasn't there to help with anything) and we spent a lot of time picking people up.

Nessebar is a beautiful town and a must see fir any holiday maker. The tour guide was very informative and a good host. It would be good if this could be offered as a full day with the morning for touring and afternoon as free time - not everyone will have confidence to use local buses to return and half a day want enough to see the whole town.

Very informative tour but you just did not get enough free time at the end to explore the island and its many little shops and restaurants. We decided to stay on and make our own way home by water ferry which was really nice way to travel.

Great

This was a pleasant morning trip to nessebar old town. It is a short coach drive from Sunny beach and you spend approximately an hour walking with the tour guide who talks about the town's buildings and its history. You then have around 90 minutes to explore on your own before heading back to the coach. Nessebar is a beautiful town. Well worth a visit.

Guides were very helpful and open. The tour was good, although most of the root was about churches and religious buildings, if possible I would recommend to also have information on other buildings and history (not that the guide did not talk about the history, he did and very well, but always used the religious buildings as reference). I much appreciated the free time to walk around, it allowed us to revisit some places leasurely.

It was a good tour to be able to go and see the old town and spend some time browsing the markets there. We had a taxi sent to our hotel to be taken to the bus, with the driver speaking no english and then some confusion on where the bus was, we eventually made it. The tour was essentially being taken to all the churches in the old town, having some yoghurt and jam, anc then we had just over an hour of free time although we felt this was too much as its only a small area
