What to expect

Sugarcane, sacred shrines, a riverboat trip and even a voodoo show. This exclusive excursion has a bit of everything that makes the Dominican Republic so fascinating. Expect to meet plenty of locals and explore inland around the River. Get off the beaten track for a true flavour of Dominican culture and society when you visit a fruit farm, a fishing village and a market. Luis, one of our expert guides, says, ‘Higuey is where most of the local resort staff live, and it's an enriching experience to see daily life in full swing. At the market, you can buy all sorts, from a bottle of rum to a live chicken.'You'll get a real taste for the country straight away with a visit to a plantation. Savour tropical fruits such as papaya and pineapple as well as coffee and cocoa. Up next is Higuey, the provincial capital, where you'll get to poke around for spices in the market and see locals stocking up on fresh produce. You'll also pass by the lamdark modern basilica – an important shrine.Next, we head south through tropical countryside to the little fishing village of Boca de Yuma. After a leisurely lunch of Caribbean dishes prepared with local ingredients, you'll set off on a boat ride on the River Yuma. Afterwards, discover the complicated history of Dominican sugarcane plantations at a ‘batey'. These plantation camps are home to communities of sugarcane-harvesting Haitians. Meet and chat with the community, and then watch as they put on a voodoo show.

Great

The Voodoo show was the most enjoyable part of the trip and I'd would have liked it to last longer. Maybe spend less time at the local family house. The real star of the day was Mama Gina (the guide), she was fabulous.

Fantastic day out with Mamma Gina and her team. Good to see some of ‘real’ DR although very humbling! Met lovely DR and Haiti people, beautiful souls who have little. Take treats the the Haiti children, sweets, pens, notebooks, toiletries. They wait so patiently for the smallest gift. Full day excision, pickup at 7.45am and back 630pm. Basic but tasty lunch and drinks throughout the day. Thanks Gina for such a great experience touching on local life x

Unfortunately the usual guide was unavailable at the last minute and the guide who covered did not speak great English and we didn't understand a lot of what was said. The main reason for booking the trip was the boat ride however, when we got to that part we were told we had to go down 97 steps, which we would later have to climb back up. That was bad enough but then we were told there would be no boat ride as the people that ran it had already left.

One of the excursions we did actually really enjoy, we were so moved and touched by the voodoo, words cannot describe how amazing it was to see part of the culture, the river was breath taking however lots of rubbish in it. Money was a very focused subject as alot of experiences we had in Dominican Republic

Long day. Tour guide very full on the whole time she was very loud & over the top for us. Mini bus driver on return was falling asleep at the wheel very worrying. Lunch basic not much choice no milk even for coffee.

Great

A very interesting and eye opening experience. Overall it was very humbling to see the locals and how they live. For us there was a little to much coach travel although our guide "Mama" was very entertaining. The river cruise was however a let down, no more than 10 minutes and not a lot to see, a couple of pelicans tbh which you will see near most quiet beaches here.

Mama Gina is fabulous ?? rum on the coach was very nice, also water & coke. Coffee making & chocolate house very good. The lady that lived there was very friendly & funny. River trip a bit boring. Lunch was very nice, was in a good spot. Voodoo show was a little disappointing. We didn't feel it was very authentic, seemed just put on for tourists, which is a shame. If it wasn't for mama Gina the trip wouldn't have been as good as it was.

Mama Gina was amazing, knowledgeable. Trip shows real life of dominican people. Boat trip was really disappointing 10 minutes in the river, sad, could be much more better. And if you going to this trip please bring something for poor kids that you will meet at voodoo show . ( sweets, chocolate clothing generally anything to help them, they will appreciate and wait) overall this trip will never be good without Mama Gina, she’s amazing, big thank you from Erik and Verginya

This was one of the best trips we have ever been on. Our guide Mama Gena was fantastic, very knowledgeable and informative throughout the whole trip and just the most wonderful person to spend the day with. Lunch was good too and all the places we visited were very interesting and gave you a true sense of the country, it's traditions, people and culture outside of the tourist resorts. We absolutely recommend booking this trip, especially if you like rum, Mama Gena keeps it flowing all day!

Mama Gena was an incredible guide, this was the highlight of my trip. So interesting, and eye opening. If you can, take some toiletries, clothes, or sweets to donate - Mama Gena does a lot of charitable work on top of being an amazing guide, and I wish I had known so I could donate some items whilst on the trip.

A trip to experience lots of aspects of dominican Republic in 1 day. The rum was flowing. The guide mama Gina was amazing, entertaining knowledgeable. We learnt so much. The boat trip was a bit disappointing. It didn't go very far. But overall an amazing full day. Initially our trip was cancelled, (it had been booked since may, holiday August!) It was cancelled in the middle of the night of the day of the trip.! This was unacceptable communication. They said they did not run it on this day???

I have travelled all over the world and been any many excursions. However, I have to say, this trip was up there with the best I have ever been on!! The guide we had on the day really made the whole day incredibly memorable. She was fabulously knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The trip allowed us to really get an understanding of the culture of the country and the people. It was fabulous.
