What to expect

The east is one of the jewels in the Algarve's crown, and this full day excursion offers a flavour of its local culture as well as a chance to get to know its biggest city. You'll visit Faro, Olhao, and Tavira and travel through beautiful countryside in the Ria Formosa National Park. Sofia, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘This excursion is special because it brings the local culture to life. You'll see a performance of Fado music which is the heart of Portuguese tradition, a soulful singer fronts a group of musicians and together they convey passion, struggle, and longing. It's a hugely significant part of Portuguese culture.'We'll begin in Faro, the regional capital, where you'll have free time to explore the old town – the cathedral is a must-see. Next up is Olhao, a village on the banks of the Ria Formosa. You'll visit its famous fish market and then enjoy free time for lunch and shopping. Sofia adds, ‘As well as showcasing the fruits of the sea, the market is a good place to make contact with smallholders selling their own produce, such as honey, jams, cakes, and liqueurs.'In the afternoon, we'll head to Tavira to see its top sights and visit the castle for a stroll along its ramparts. Along with the castle, the seven-arched Roman bridge and a pair of historic churches are just a handful of the best things to do in Tavira. Cap off the day by dropping into a church for a live show of fado singing – the melancholic music genre that is a national treasure.

Great

The tour improved as the day went on - - Faro was disappointing bur Tavira was fantastic (may have been luck that he visit coincided with their festival). It was a long day traveling from L:agos - - took almost 90 to the first point on the trip. Picked up at 7.30am - returned 7.15pm.

Great

Liked the general information and history of Faro and Tavira. There was very little to see or do in Olhao and too much free time here.

Excellent

Great to see another parts of the Algarve, the old towns are lovely to explore and seeing the fish market, to get a feel for other places, and the concert was enjoyable. Guide has loads of information. Just a note to highlight when going on excursions there is a time of pick ups and drop offs before and after, this didn't bother us, but it did some others as it can add another 2 hours, it's worth checking with your rep maybe. However, we loved it, coaches are comfortable with air con.

Our guide was very knowledgeable but spent more time speaking German than English, selling the fishing village is totally inappropriate as it’s a huge town with a fish market hall and farmers vegetable hall??

Great

Great tour. Faro, Olhao and Tavira were really interesting. Although needed a little more time in Faro and Tavira. Not sure if the coastal visit to Castello was the best use of limited time - if it would have given a little more time in the other places. Lydia was an amazing and vey knowledgeable guide. We were the only Brits on the coach but she gave great explanation of all the places we visited. Thanks again Lydia and Ricardo the driver.

Excellent

We were picked up early and had to change bus in Faro. We had a quick tour of Faro, visited the markets in Olhao, before a quick photo stop at Vila Nova de Cacela before heading to Tavira. Another short tour and some free time before the Fado Show. A full day with wonderful sights, sounds & smells

Great

Enjoyed the tour and the various places visited. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and informative. Would have been nice to have had longer in a couple of the places visited. Overall was enjoyable and worth going on to see some of the places the Algarve has to offer. Fado was also a nice experience.
