What to expect

Carthage was the capital of ancient Rome's greatest rival and the site of a titanic clash of civilisations. Today, its ruins bear testament to Rome's ultimate victory, as you'll discover during this tour, which also takes in Sidi Bou Said and a stop by the Bardo Museum. Mariam, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘A good place to get your bearings in ancient Carthage is Byrsa Hill. It's a bit of a climb but the view over the site, the city and the bay are absolutely worth it.'You'll start the morning with a visit to Bardo Museum, home to a magnificent collection of mosaics recovered from Roman villas in the region. Then, it's off to Carthage. Under renowned military leaders such as Hannibal, this site was one of the greatest powers of the classical world. Exploring with a guide gives you the historical background and the local perspective on the story of Carthage. You'll see ruins such as the Baths of Antoninus, which were the largest thermal baths in the Roman Empire. It's a great spot to enjoy the thermal waters – right by the sea. Have a look around the amphitheatre and the Tophet sacrificial site before taking a break for lunch. After a traditional Tunisian local lunch, you'll visit Sidi Bou Said, a clifftop village of cobbled alleys fringed by whitewashed houses with sky-blue doors and window shutters. The blue and white colour scheme has echoes of the Greek islands, and contrasts nicely with the sea beyond. You'll discover the town's history and find out why so many artists have called it home over the years.

The guide was very nice, friendly and knowledgeable but the trip itself was not what we were expecting. Classic TUI trying to cram too much into a trip, everything felt very rushed. The trip is branded as a Carthage tour and we spent 25 minutes at 'Carthage' we didn't get a chance to have a good look around and we didn't even see Byrsa hill and yet we spent an hour and half in Sidi bousaid which I didn't travel all the way to Tunisia to see.

Enjoyed Carthage more than Saidi bou Said. Would have liked more time in Carthage. Personally didn't rate Sidi bou Said, too busy. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made sure we were safe. He did tend to repeat everything

Fesra was very good, full of fun, very caring and very knowledgeable. He walked us for what appeared like miles. I was surprised that this excursion was not marked like the excursion we completed two das later which said it was not suitable for people with poor mobility

Guide spoke on microphone from his seat in the bus. We were in row 4 and found it hard to hear. He was very professional and fluent in both German and English but showed no empathy or interest in anyone or anything. Off-bus, he marched on talking as he went, and those not close to him simply would not hear. Lunch was typical of an excursion lunch, very poor quality and surly incompetent servers. I believe we .missed out on a planned stop in Carthage due to road closures, though no explanat

Enjoyed seeing more of Tunisia, despite long bus journeys. Thought visit to Carthage was not long enough & would have liked some free time to explore it without the guide. Felt we were rushed through it, probably because we were due at a restaurant for lunch. Also found it difficult sometimes to follow what the guide was saying, as he kept swapping between French, English and German. Would have been better if he just spoke in English only.

Our guide was first class. He had lots if information to impart. However we didn't get enough time at the Carthage sites to look round on our own and too long at Sidi Bou Said. Could easily have missed out on Sidi Bou Said, it was full of tourist tat available anywhere. Lunch was nice but I was not able to specify gluten free and veggie ( my wife is both) so she missed out on the main and desert.

Felt like a very long day….particularly with numerous hotel pick ups/drop offs. Overall am glad I did trip (just) although bits of it felt a bit under whelming. Sidi Bou in particular whilst pretty also felt like a bit of a tourist trap.

Everything. The Guide was very knowledge. As a tourist we pay local city taxes. This money should be use to make this city much cleaner. It is a shame not having a sustainable policy and use of plastics. This message should be passed to the government. I also mentioned tonthe guide this issue

Having information repeated was onerous and held up the tour which made it less enjoyable. It also reduced free time at each place. We were surprised that there was no explanation that lunch was a set menu or any checking of dietary needs.

The "lunch" wasn't nothing more than half a bag of microwave rice and a few chunks of chicken. I would have rather had longer at Carthage and sidi bou said and paid for a cheaper ticket. We could have got lunch at sidi bou said and it would have be better experience and better value of money. We had 18 mins to "look" round carthage and the church on the hill. 90% of the coach had to use the toilet after the drive and we queued up to use them so we even got less time.

The guide spoke German and English and spent far longer explaining more in German than in English. He also left the bus on the way back after asking a passenger to sort out tips for himself. The journey was 2.5 hours each way, not the 1.5 we were ADVISED.

Great

Best excursion of all the ones we did in Tunisia.(El Jem second!) Loads of stops, great value. Long day with early start. The coach starts collecting guests at Sousse hotels then an hour to Hammamet to collect more TUI guests - take a book to read on coach. Great history of Carthage. Lots of walking so need good shoes. Sidi town was beautiful, great views & lots of market shops. Lunch bland basic & disappointing-take sandwich from hotel. Guide (Radwan) was excellent; friendly & knowledgable.

Trip was great but my issue is we didn’t get much time in Sidi Bou said. Only 1.5 hours, needed at least 3. There was a spot by the marina I wanted to visit and didn’t have the time. That’s my only problem with the tour. If we could get more time there that would make the tour much better.

Excellent

The trip itself was excellent, very informative guide, stunning sights and a lovely lunch. The excursion was totally worth the money and I would highly recommend it. The one aspect that let it down: I booked it on the app in advance of my holiday for a Sunday. At 17:10 the night before I was due to go on the trip I was told it had been postponed to the Thursday. The rep admitted Sundays are always unlikely to operate-this option should either then be removed from the app or honoured to guests.

Great

The trip was lovely, the driver was not. He felt the need to go far too fast and Tunisian roads are not exactly smooth. The only downside was 2 hours in Sidi Bou Said, it was far too long and the guide was too keen to steer us towards the gift shops he wanted us to buy from rather than showing us Sidi Bou Said. Overall, the trip is good, but less time in Sidi Bou Said for shopping and more time spent showing the town.

Wasn't keen on being on a coach for 12 hours, it was a very long day. Guide and drivers were brilliant. The food was nice though as an all inclusive holiday maker I found it odd having to pay for drinks. 1 drink should be included.

Good experience, however very little time spent at the ruins. No time to explore and wander around. This, for me was the attraction for the trip, it was a long coach journey to get to the Roman village and we spent approx 20 mins there. We quickly moved on to Sidi Bou Said and were given almost 2 hours there to look around the market and cafes. Personally, would have liked longer in the Roman village and less time at the market.

The staff were all very friendly and professional. My room on the 4th floor was clean and modern with safe and A/C The beach was white sand, clean and nice shallow warm sea. Plenty of loungers too. Nice local food on the buffet. The wifi router was quite often full, which meant connecting was sometimes hard. Although the beach directly in front of the hotel was clean, I suggest a daily clean up of plastic/rubbish for 100m either side of the hotel front - lots of plastic waste washed up.

Great

The guide was friendly and knowledgeable, however we were not given much time at all at Carthage. Most of the site was overlooked as we had to follow our guide theough to the end, meaning that we only ended up having around 25 minutes to look at the archaeology - as archaeologists ourselves, it was disappointing. Moreover, we were not informed that the Carthage museum was closed and under renovation. Instead, we were given far more time at Sidi Bousaid, which for many (including us) was not the main allure of the trip. Moreover, the ‘lunch’ provided was abissmle; the vegetarian option was only chips, and we were not informed that drinks were not included until we arrived at the cafe.

Great

Hotel and staff ( Haida the drinks waiter , Farida the housekeeper and also the head waiter, forgot his name, sorry ) were all excellent, rep Sarah always on hand to help and advise. Little disappointed at our trip to the Atlas mountains being cancelled, understandable, but maybe a solution for smaller groups could be looked at.
