Do this because

Discover the Dominican countryside and its people on a small group walking tour
Visit off-the-beaten-track parts of the country and help support rural communities
Opportunity to enjoy a swim in the River Anamuya in the heart of the rainforest
Tastings of locally grown and environmentally friendly seasonal products
Expert local guide with an unrivalled knowledge of the Dominican outback and its people

What to expect

Take a walk on the wild side with a tour of the Dominican Republic's rugged Anamuya Mountains. See a snapshot of rural life as shown to you by an in-the-know local. Alex, one of our expert guides, says, ‘I'm a native and have been guiding tours here for more than 10 years. You'll learn about local history, plants and crops, and get to try home-grown coffee and fruit, too.'Fun facts, exotic wildlife and the chance to take a river swim – this tour has it all. After pick-up from your hotel, we'll head deep into the Dominican outback. And because we'll visit the less-travelled parts of the country, it helps support areas that don't usually benefit from tourism. What's more, you'll be part of a small group of just 16 guests, minimising our carbon footprint. ‘It's a great way to get in touch with nature and give back to the rural community,' says Alex. Rolling through the forest-carpeted countryside, we'll arrive at a ranch, where we begin with complimentary drinks and the lowdown on the day ahead.Set off trekking through luxuriant, peaked landscapes as your friendly guide shows you around. You'll meet the locals and taste locally grown seasonal products – from farm to fork, it doesn't get much fresher. Be sure to keep an eye out for rare plants, birds and wildlife, too. Being part of this experience is a boost to wildlife conservation efforts in the region. Finally, we'll head to the River Anamuya, where you can cool off with a well-earned swim and a thirst-quenching coconut water.

Great

The ride to the initial walking point is in a very representative local transport. It is synergistic with the rural location. The guides were knowledgeable and keen to show many local fruits. It is a real reflection of the difference within the country, but it keeps one 'real' in terms of the vacation experience. Be prepared for a couple of short river crossings that are a little more and ankle deep. The organisers are ready with 'crocs' if you prefer. The rural journey home is a must in my view

The Anamuya Mountains Small Group Walking Tour was okay, but the organization could be better. For an eco-labeled tour, the transport was far from eco-friendly, and we inhaled quite a bit of exhaust fumes. There wasn’t much actual walking—just long stops—and it felt more like wandering around random fields than exploring real mountains. The staff was friendly but spoke little English. The views were nice, and we saw some nature and animals, but nothing too exciting.

Loved this, saw the real countryside and it’s so beautiful. It does say sensible footwear but we had to walk through a lot of water so may be worth taking waterproof shoes or shoes you don’t mind getting wet

Thoroughly enjoyed this trip. Walking up hills, alongside rivers, crossing and swimming in the river too. Very informative guides, pointing out coffee, mango, orange, guava, avocado, ylang ylang and coconut growing on the hillsides, most of which we were able to sample Seeing the homes of the locals was interesting and humbling. Such a great experience.

Needs to be flagged that you’ll need water footwear aswell as your walking boots/trainers. The rivers are full of sharpe stones.

Meeting local people and the guides. Experiencing the outdoors and fauna and floral. Beautiful and thoroughly enjoyed it. An effort needs to be made to clear rubbish away on the walk. Alot of plastic bottles.

Whilst we enjoyed the company of the guides more interaction and information as we walked would have improved the experience. Appreciate language issues for non English speakers (2 guide supports) so more pressure on main guide.

Disappointing for the cost Guide introduced us to the two local families you meet, and showed us some fruit, but didn't provide explanations/guidance about how people live in the hills/rural, their struggles and successes etc. guide didn't say much of anything Could've been run earlier in the morning so you're not walking in the midday sun Wasn't in the mountains like the title states

This was an excellent tour for anyone wanting to get off resort and see some of the countryside. The bus that collected us was a bit old and bashed but safe. The drivers and guide were excellent, they took us up a dirt track to the mountain side where we walked, stopping along the way to sample fruit from the trees, oranges, lemons, vanilla, ylang ylang, the views were amazing. We had a stop at a traditional Dominican house where we had coconut and coffee and then had a stop to swim in a river.

Great

The tour guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and lovely to see a different part of the Dominican Republic but the tour was over in 2 and a half hours. It was advertised as longer and would of been nice to do more walking. Not sure if it was because we were a group of just 7 people. Also the wait for the bus to pick us up was around 1hr and 15mins. That's too long

The trip was extremely well organised, never once did they ask our name or hotel but even though we had to change vehicles on both journeys, they new exactly who was to be where. The guides were very friendly and informative. The views on the walk were lovely and the swim in the river finished the trip perfectly

Lovely walking tour of the local mountains. Guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. The views were amazing and eating fruit/nuts off trees was great on the way round. Take flip flops for the river crossings, not advertised in the list of stuff to bring (the rocks are sharp).

Très beaux paysages dans les montagnes d'Anamuya et intéressante et authentique découverte de la vie rurale en compagnie d'une famille d'agriculteurs. Juste dommage que le guide ne parlait pas français alors que l'excursion est vendue en français.

We enjoyed the walking part of the trip but it was a small part of the overall time. Pick up was late. very little explanation along the way. The guide wasn’t as forthcoming as the original description in terms of local knowledge. The only tasting we had was a tiny shot of coffee while visiting one local resident. There were four of us and 4 guides/ helpers. They helped us cross the river a few times. A long time spent at the river and then straight back to hotel after a long wait for the bus.

Everything went as planned. Only 4 of us on tour, which was great. 2 guides, both of which were very helpful. There was no opportunity for swimming as the river was quite low but we did have to wade across it 3 times which was very refreshing on the feet as it was a hot day. Nice to meet real locals who provided us with coffee and bananas and cold water if we wanted. No negative points.

Great

This walking tour gives a good insight into rural Dominican life. It is more of a leisurely stroll around some hills, it is not on the mountains. The guide Gabriel is very friendly and knowledgeable plus the local helpers are great too. There is an extremely malnourished but very friendly puppy who joins in the tour along the route at the beginning and end so if future travellers could bring him some treats that would be great as we only had fruit which he wouldn’t eat - please help him!

Excellent

Lovely enjoyable walk through the countryside, the guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable. It was lovely to get away from the hustle and bustle of the resort and enjoy the quiet beauty of the mountains. We tasted local coffee, ate the best pineapple and fresh coconut then swam in the river. there were a couple of steep uphill sections, no more than 300mtrs and there was no rush. All in all we would highly recommend this trip away from the normal tourist routes. 5 Stars

Great

This is an incredible experience walking through the hills. It is definitely a hike, so best to wear appropriate clothes and cover up as there is not much shade at all. You WILL cross a river multiple times and it can be above ankle height. So wear waterproof shoes or something to that effect. The local guides that helped wore wellies.

The tour is not a small group tour by any means. We had around 30 people in our group TUI advertise this to be 12(?) maximum. Had to wait 40 minutes at a service station with no explanation, turns out we was getting on a different bus. Knee depth+ rivers to walk through (we’re 5’11). The tour itself is ok, don’t have great expectations for it. The guide was brilliant spoke fantastic English. Great activity for a group.

Great

Really good trip where we got to meet locals in the countryside, see some of the wildlife and take in some really beautiful surroundings. I would suggest two things though: - use a better transport vehicle. The one we had struggled to climb a narrow country road and nearly rolled back a few times which was quite an experience - warn people in advance that the route involves walking ankle deep across a river. No problem with that, but I'd have liked to have known to bring appropriate footwear.

A great half day walking tour. Gabriel our guide was informative and knowledgeable and set a steady pace with breaks throughout, including a stop for coffee and fresh mango. Vladimir the driver was excellent, especially on the narrow approach track. The dip in the river at the end was a refreshing end to the walk. The only improvements I would suggest were better organisation of the pick ups. Also add to the description to bring flip-flops to walk across the shallow river on the route.

We loved this excursion and found it to be incredible value for money. We were part of Alex's 'family' and as it was a small group we built a great rapport with him, he was constantly stopping throughout the walking tour to talk to us about the local wildlife, plants, people and beautiful landscape that surrounded us, and even picked fresh mango, banana and pineapple from trees for us to try. The river swim was very refreshing halfway through the hike also and deserted except for us.

Inital transport was late, after 30 minutes we saw the concierge and they got in touch with the tour operators who explained that due to a mix up there would be a short delay. We were picked up at 0900 rather than 0805 but the tour lasted the stated time so no worries there, these things happen. Alex, our guide was awesome, really friendly from the outset. The walk was really pleasant and along the was Alex informed us about local history and the floral and fauna. We ate mangoes and guava stright from the tree. Alex's companion rode a horse that we were able to pop our bags into so that we could walk unhindered and he brought along a supply of water. In our group there were 11 people, 5 of which were made up of me, my wife and three daughters. Our youngest daughter is 6, Alex looked at her and said "She might struggle on the way back, I'll bring an extra horse along and she can have a ride back if she's tired" lovely, thoughtful gentleman. I'd really would recommend this trip, it's not Bruce Parry level jungle exploration but it's a whole lot more the 99% of tourists that travel to the Dominican will see.
