What to expect

Santo Domingo is brimming with architectural and historical gems. It's a city that tells a fascinating story, as it was the first city established in the ‘New World' by Europeans. Luis, one of our local guides, says, ‘We like to say we were the first – we had the first church in the Americas, the first hospital, first monastery and first university. All here, in Santo Domingo.' You'll discover the major sights as well as the secrets of the colonial past by coach, train and foot on this sightseeing tour.Kick off at Independence Park before heading into the warren of cobbled streets that is the old town – known as the Zona Colonial – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll see sites dating back to the 15th century and visit the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Alcazar de Colon, which belonged to Christopher Columbus's family. You'll find out more about the complex history of the island with a 4D cinema experience recounting the storming of the city on New Year's Day in 1586 by English privateers led by Francis Drake.Next, hop aboard a mini-train for a tour of the colonial zone before stopping for lunch. You'll savour traditional Dominican dishes in a family-owned restaurant. It's a showstopping location in a 16th century colonial building full of character and charm. Round off the day with a stroll along Calle de las Damas – site of the Pantheon and Ozama Fort, then enjoy free time to shop or explore. The colonial zone is dotted with cosy, tree-shaded squares and historic churches.

Great

This tour was a long day , we enjoyed it. Our guide reuben spoke very well, English as a second language. Informative and knowledgeable guide. Lunch provided was delicious. Not too much free time at the end of the tour which was a shame as I would've liked to explore myself. You visit religious buildings of which are beautiful. As usual the pick up takes the longest. Be prepared to walk lots.

Could not fault this trip. Our driver was one of the most informative guides I have ever had on trips abroad. And I have done a fair few. Interesting & got a real feel for Santo Domingo.

Great

Interesting tour of the city including the Cathedral and Museum, guide was very informative and the lunch was very nice and in a pleasant venue. As we were staying at Cap Cana, our transfer to and from the coach pick up point was by minibus, which was punctual, clean & well air conditioned. Quite a long day at almost 12 hours door to door.

A must do! Excellent historical overview and tour of the city. Tour guide Obama was fantastic all around. Before going I read a lot online about safety in Santo Domingo but you really needn’t be worried! A beautiful city and I felt safe as a young female solo traveller, even during the hour independent time at the end of the day. A long day (13 hours total) but definitely worth it. Makes me want to go back and explore more of the city myself!

Guide was extremely knowledgeable. A lot of police walking around so felt very safe. Sellers are quite pushy which spoilt trying to shop as felt pressured and followed around the shops.

Our guide Jonny was fantastic - knowledgeable, charismatic and entertaining. Not only that, but attentive - someone had an upset reaction to some news at home and he immediately jumped to action. The trip was very enjoyable, and informative. It is a VERY long day (varying depending on where you are). From punta cana, we were out about 13 hours! Still highly recommend, the history is very fascinating especially how important it is to American history (not an American myself but so cool). Do it!

Excellent

We enjoyed the full day. Lots of things crammed in during a short period of time but just about the right balance, and 1 hour free time at the end was just enough to explore the old town on our own. The only negative was that lunch was early (11:30 ish) and rushed as we had to make way for another group to eat at the same restaurant.

Great

The content of the history centred on the Spanish invasion and white elite history. It would have enhanced the tour to have more material about the non-White population, including up to the present day.

Our guide Obama was very knowledgeable and helpful. The journey was long but he kept us entertained with conversation about the country and culture. The bus was comfortable and clean and arrived promptly. Lunch was excellent and the variety of sites visited during the day was perfect. Very good way of experiencing and understanding the Dominican Republic outside of the resort Highly recommended

Great

On the whole service excellent but the attitude of the bar staff let them down. They always served younger women and locals first, the pool bar was the worst as the female bartenders didn't seem to want to be there. I know they get busy but it is their job,an occasional smile would be appreciated. Food excellent.

This excursion was an extremely long day, due to all the pick ups 13.5 hours in total. We really enjoyed the trip, although it did say that soft drinks were included throughout, we received only one bottle of water. Lunch provided was lovely and the restaurant was clean and staff great. The tour guide Johnny was very informative and provided the information in a number of language, it would have been nice to have had the opportunity to go on one day with just English.

Great

We enjoyed the tour guide (Obama) and the information he shared for the city, the people and the county's history. He was also lovely and energised throughout the tour. We didn't like the fact that we felt insecure and faced a real danger when the tyre of the bus on our way back broke down and then we had to go to fix it. It was obvious that the tyre had never been changed and as such put all of us in danger. Also, no one contacted us from TUI to see how are we after the shock we went through!

It was not good having to listen to three languages especially when so hot so this is one disadvantage. The meal in the restaurant was very good and a surprise to see a duo dancing during our meal which was nice.

Average

It was nice to see the old building and statues but I wish we’d have have been told more about them……we were expecting our tour to be English speaking not 90% Spanish so by the time he did start telling us in English you’d lost interest in listening to anything, there were 3 Spanish people on the tour out of probably 40 other people so it should have been the been nicer the other way round, listening to Spanish for over 4 hours was to much, the trip was 5/10 tops for this reason

We thought Obama was absolutely incredible! His passion, his wealth of knowledge and respect for all cultures made the trip what it was. His passion for his country and its history was plain to see and we thoroughly enjoyed having him as our guide.

Brilliant day and the tour guide “Obama” was brilliant and spoke 7 different languages and his English was good. The bus driver drove safely and the coach was clean and very comfortable. The restaurant we attended to have lunch was clean and friendly with good local food and drink and we were not rushed. The attractions were interesting and Obama was very knowledgeable showing everyone the places of interest and the history. need more than 30 minutes of our own time in centre. Obama was fabulous

De bezichtigingen waren ok. De gids hield ons in het oog als een kudde lammetjes ?? Het negatieve is dat de uitstappen toch wel vrij prijzig zijn en dat de gids Engelstalig/Frans/Duits was.

Great

The guide Roberto was excellent it was a shame that he had to keep translating into 3/4 languages which meant that he was talking a lot of the time on the tour which then reduced time for our questions. I actually felt sorry for him on the coach telling us about Santa Domingo, I felt he had no breaks to catch his breath. The coach was excellent, driver was excellent and the timings of the day where accurate.
