What to expect

With its blend of African, Brazilian and Portuguese influences, Boa Vista's capital, Sal Rei, is a riot of colour. On this exclusive tour, you'll sample Cape Verdean specialities, visit markets vibrant with local life and enjoy a guided tour of the town's most interesting locations. Artur, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Sal Rei is Portuguese for Salt King, which tells you all you need to know about what the town was once famous for. You'll see salt pans around the capital, though most are no longer in use. Some around the fringes of town have even been built on.'First up is a trip to the recently restored Fatima chapel – a windswept sanctuary with a beautiful simplicity on a rocky bluff just north of Sal Rei. From here, you can take in the views over the coast towards the capital. Next, we'll explore the island's past in both the Sea and Shipwreck Museums. Admire a collection of exhibits from underwater archaeological finds and artworks that reflect on the history, art and culture of the Cape Verdean people. We dial the volume up a bit next with a visit to the market. Mingle with locals as you browse the handmade jewellery, clothing and fresh produce on display. Take a walk along Praia de Diante beach before trying Cape Verdean cocktails and tasty specialities at Sodade House of Culture. Finally, there's free time to explore this appealing little town at your own pace – visit the pretty church of St Isabel or head to one of Sal Rei's great beaches for a paddle or a coffee with a view.

Much appreciated glimpse of Sal Rei, I really appreciated the specialities tasting and shopping at the various stops (museums, shops, market). Wilson has been a great guide an I didn’t mind that Santa Fatima was closed at all, the view was amazing. It’s just a glimpse though, next time I would definitely spend the day!

We thought both museums were very interesting in particular the Naufragof. Wilson , as a tour guide, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. We loved the local food and drink tasting in such a lovely setting. It was a good mix of guided parts and free time to explore independently . Please don't change anything! Fantastic value for money.

It was interesting to see Sal Rei and experience the obvious poverty there is there. The first museum we went to was not too interesting with a few artifacts to see; the second one was much better and the guide very informative about the history of the islands. The visit to the church of St Fatima also was interesting to hear the history. The time given to wander alone was not worthwhile as there were too many people pestering us to buy their goods and there also was not much of interest.

Tour guide and driver were excellent. Would have benefitted from more warning about the hassle from traders when entering the market, we didn’t stay as it was uncomfortable but others were blocked in shops by vendors. The museum naufragos was very good with a very knowledgable guide. Appreciated refreshments and toilet facilities

Our guide was clearly extremely proud of his country and shared some great knowledge, he was also extremely helpful in escorting my wife and i to the pharmacy to translate for my wifes infected mosquito bites. The young girl at the shipwreck museum was also first class, for a young girl she delivered a great informative experience, the undersea museum was also great the owner Mr Zezui is a legend! A great value trip really recommend!

I enjoyed the tour, seeing the Chapel and museums, but as toon as our guide left us so we could have free time, we constantly had people coming up to us, trying to get us to go with them, i did not feel very safe with this although we were told crime rates are extremely low. We went to the market and did not really get to look around, as people would not let us move to the next stall. I understand that people are poor and need tourists to buy but it was too much for us.

The trip was great. Really gave you some insight into Sal Rei and the history of Cape Verde. It was really insightful to visit the chapel and museums. Sal Rei is simplistic compared to other capitals. The locals did pester a little for you to visit their shops, restaurants and stalls but that is understandable as they rely so heavily on tourists to make a living. A great trip and the tour guide was fantastic.

Guide Stefan, was lovely and very knowledgeable. Visit to a small chapel with great views. Onto a museum which told the history of Boa Vista from the Portuguese through slavery etc. A small sea museum mostly shells followed. A stop at a bar to try local food and drink including grogue before having some free time to walk around explore the markets or sit in a bar and take it easy. Even though visited Sal Rei on another trip it was different this time

Great guide - Stefan - and driver Peter Crouch. Stefan had a lovely manner and was great source of information. The shipwreck museum was a highlight and the female guide there was awesome. Wilson the tour guide was excellent. He made the excursion interesting and great. The pirate museum was the best. "Jack Sparrow" informed us of the history and made the whole experience come alive. There wasn't enough time to bargain hunt, visit the local shops and have a look around the square.

The Sal Rei Sightseeing Tour with Local Speciality Tastings was fantastic! We experienced authentic local culture, visited the slums, had a relaxing time at the Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima, explored two interesting museums, and enjoyed speciality tastings in Sal Rei. The stops at the church and eating the food in town were great. The guides were very friendly. The tour was advertised as 2-4 hours, which we relied on as we went with 2 small children. The guide was informative, interesting and helpful. Unfortunately the bus taking us from our resort had broken down and we had to wait nearly an hour for another bus to arrive. The TUI reps were not around so we were not informed as to what was happening. The guide joined us on the bus at one of the other pick ups. Again it would of been helpful if the TUI reps had advised that this would be the case and not kept us in the dark.

The overall trip was good. The guides were very good and all made you feel welcome and invited questions to enable you to learn more. If there was anything to nit pick then it would be that one of the local guides was a little difficult to understand at times but he did explain further if asked. I also thought there would have been more walking around Sal Rei with the guide rather than mostly on and off the bus but realise this was possibly not needed.

Great

Our guide was fun, interesting and helpful. The museum was very good. Would have liked longer "free time" for shopping.

Great

The tour was expensive for what it was, although parts were very good. 5 of us went on another visit to Sal Rei for 50 Euros total cost. The guide was excellent, however the trinket stall/shop we were directed to and the small market were not. I would not wish to repeat that experience. The shopkeepers were extremely aggressive and would not take 'no' for an answer. Their prices were also much inflated. Other areas in Sal Rei had better shops and a couple of supermarkets well worth a visit.
