Surrounded by green hills and working coffee farms, it offers a slower pace and a strong connection to the landscapes that shape everyday life here. Wooden balconies painted in bright colours line the main streets, while cafés and bakeries spill out onto lively squares. From here, you can wander into cloud forest trails, sip freshly roasted coffee, or simply watch the rhythm of the town unfold.

1. Walk through the Cocora Valley

Just outside Salento lies the Cocora Valley, one of Colombia’s most striking landscapes. Hiking trails wind through rolling green hills dotted with massive wax palm trees, the tallest palm species in the world and Colombia’s national tree. Some reach heights of more than 60 metres, creating an unusual skyline across the valley. As you walk the trails, you may also spot hummingbirds and other native wildlife that thrive in the region’s cool mountain climate.

2. Explore the colourful town streets

Salento’s streets are small but full of character. Along Calle Real, you’ll find artisan shops selling handmade bags, woven textiles and wooden souvenirs crafted by local makers. Climb the steps to the Alto de la Cruz viewpoint, where wide views stretch across the surrounding mountains and patchwork farmland. The climb is short but steep and the viewpoint offers one of the best perspectives of the town and the valley beyond.

3. Visit a local coffee farm and try local flavours

Coffee is central to life around Salento, and the surrounding hills are filled with family-run plantations. You can visit a traditional finca cafetera to see how beans move from plant to cup, often finishing with a freshly brewed tasting of the region’s smooth Arabica coffee. While you are here, try local dishes such as trucha, grilled trout often served with patacones, or the hearty bandeja paisa, a classic platter of beans, rice, meat and plantain.
