You’ll visit the Freedom Flag Pole, a national monument since 1970, and a slave museum. You’ll also find a church, the first of its kind to be built in West Africa by the Portuguese. You'll continue to Juffureh – the home village of the famous slave Kunta Kinteh. Alex Haley based the story of his best-seller Roots on him, tracing the events of the transatlantic slave trade. You’ll then reach the highlight of the tour: the visit of the Kinteh clan. You’ll stop at another museum displaying more than 400 years of slave trade, which contributed considerably to the depopulation of the continent. You’ll then board a pirogue for a 2-mile sea cruise to Kuntah Kinteh Island (former James Island). You’ll see a dungeon, the only one remaining out of 14 which were washed away by erosion or the gunpowder explosions in the mid-XVIII century. After gaining information on this place, you’ll cruise back to the village and have lunch in a local restaurant. You'll drive back to Barra and catch the ferry to Banjul.

I need to say, that we only to9k this with tui, as we were told l9cal tour guides were not great. Since we have used local serviced for a lot less and their service and knowledge is superior for a lot less money.

Very good excursion incorporating various different experiences, eg travel via bus, ferry and boat as well as a considerable amount on foot. Some aspects challenging for someone with mobility issues, however staff and guides were very helpful. Overall an enjoyable trip.

We found it quite informative! It literally brought history to life & gave us a whole new perspective on the transatlantic slave trade.

Echt in Afrika, goed georganiseerd, goed verteld.

The tour was good but we were waiting on the ferry for more than 2hrs, by the time we got to the island the tour was rushed and then we had to rush to get the ferry back. Beyond anyone's control of course, but nonetheless frustrating.

We thought all our guides including Modou and Lamin were very informative and delivered the tour very well. Modou in particular made sure we were safe and all stayed together at Banjul port and on the ferry and also on the return trip at Barra port.

The main guide didn't really explain much and didn't tell us Areas that we were driving through. He spent more time 9n his phone than anything else . He was also quite abrupt about us being late for pickup when in fact we were early as proved to him by our booking details !!

Great itinerary, lovely boat trip to James Island. Saw dolphins on the way back to the South. The two guides were both a bit lecturey- would have liked a more interactive style
