What to expect

Isola Bella was conceived in 1650 by Count Vitaliano VI Borromeo who decided to transform a rock outcropping from the lake into a place of delight. It took four centuries to complete this magnificent work that includes the Borromeo Palace and the spectacular gardens. The site is divided between the palace and the Italian Baroque garden.

Gained easily entry bu there is no info available about the castle at entrance , site map etc. The catering facilities as at the castle are not at all guest friendly, been refused an expresso at the till , apparently it was only available if you sit down for an extra charge of coperto?!

The trip out to see Isola Bella is a must for anyone traveling in the area. The Borromeo palace and gardens were beautiful. It was my second visit there, and I was just as charmed on this visit as I was on my first. Although more flowers were in bloom when I went there in the Spring (2008), as one would expect, I was happily surprised to see it blooming in September. Not as crowded, either!

Despite bad weather, our visit to Isola Bella was excellent. We were lucky to read that October 23 was the last day the site is open. And what we saw in the palace and the garden really exceeded our expectations. We've been to many palaces and gardens in several European countries, and Isola Bella is among the best. We were especially amazed by the "grotto" rooms and certainly by the terrace garden.

The palace is majestic, beautifully preserved and the self guided tour allows you to see the majority of the building. The sound of the lake lapping against the island and a wonderful garden with terraces and albino peacocks. The rain damped the trip but could not extinguish it's beauty.
