What to expect
Some of Nijmegen’s best bits are in the spotlight during this walking tour of the city. From the port, you’ll saunter to the old quarter, 20 minutes away. Nijmegen has the highest density of al fresco terraces in the country, and you’ll see some of them as you make your way through the bar-and-restaurant-strewn streets. Next, you’ll make tracks towards Valkhof Park. Centuries ago, this big public garden was used as a camp by the Roman Army. On the way, you’ll stroll along Lange Hezelstraat, the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands, and pass the 800-year-old Saint Stephen’s Church. This temple’s fitted with an organ from the 18th century. Plus, you’ll stop by the birthplace of the Limbourgh Brothers, a family of 15th century artists who specialised in Gothic paintings. When you arrive at Valkhof Park, you’ll explore its well-preened grounds, before heading back to the port.
