Cretan history tour and visit to a pottery workshop

What to expect

This experience will start with a personalized pick-up service at around 7am-8am from your accommodation in Rethymno. After 30 minutes, you will arrive at the most important monastery of Crete – the historical Monastery of Arkadi where you will have one hour of free time to discover its beauty. There is also a small museum where many icons and monastic relics as well as weapons are exhibited.

After that, you will visit the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna with its historical findings from Homer’s era. You will then enjoy a guided tour to the pottery workshop “TSIKALARIO”, in the village of Margarites. Here Miss Helen will show you the art of pottery but, and you can create your own ceramic.

After lunch, you will be led to an olive oil manufactory. You will have the opportunity to learn how Cretan people did olive oil in the past and to taste this amazing product. The last destination will be Melidoni cave. You will discover an amazing cave full of stalactites and stalagmites but also, full of history. Melidoni cave is also called ‘Gerodospilios’. It was used for religious ceremonies. During the Minoan Civilisation, it was a place of worship for Talos, the bronze giant guardian of Crete who protected the island from enemies. After the visit to the cave you will come back to Rethymno at around 4.30pm – 5pm.
