Introducing Gjirokaster

Known as the ‘City of Stone,’ Gjirokaster is a UNESCO World Heritage Site tucked into the Drino Valley in southern Albania. Its steep cobbled streets and Ottoman-era houses climb the hillside, watched over by a fortress dating back to the Byzantine times. The Old Bazaar is perfect for wandering through small shops selling hand-woven textiles, woodwork and other local treasures. It’s also a great area to settle into a cosy café, where the coffee is served strong and is best sipped slowly – just like the locals do. Also, don’t miss the popular qifqi, a tasty herb-infused rice ball that the locals love. There’re also a couple of museums worth popping into, showcasing everything from daily life to military history. Altogether, Gjirokaster is a city where history and culture meet, perfect for soaking up some southern Albanian charm.

Top three things to do in Gjirokastër:

1. Climb to Gjirokaster Castle for scenic valley views

This Byzantine fortress dominates the skyline and serves up plenty of panoramic views over the Drino Valley and Gjere Mountains. Inside, you’ll find an Arms Museum and even a Cold War-era fighter jet, offering a glimpse into Albania’s 20th-century history and role the country’s played in regional conflicts.

2. Soak up local life in the Old Bazaar

The Old Bazaar is the historic heart of Gjirokaster, dating back to the Ottoman era – that’s over 300 years ago. Once the city’s main commercial hub, it still retains a lively, traditional atmosphere with cobbled streets, small shops and artisan stalls. Cosy cafes and eateries are dotted throughout, too, making it a perfect spot to pause and enjoy local treats like baklava – a sweet nut-filled pastry – as daily life unfolds.

3. Learn about the local way of life at the Ethnographic Museum

Set in a traditional Ottoman-style house, this museum offers a fascinating look into everyday Albanian life. You’ll get to see exhibits showcasing old domestic tools, furnishings, traditional clothing and household objects. It’s a charming little stop for anyone wanting a deeper dive into Gjirokaster’s culture and heritage.
