Like nearby Pompeii, ancient Herculaneum suffered a similar fate at the hands of Vesuvius erupting in 79AD. Fortunately, archaeologists have managed to excavate parts of the city, and this half-day tour will show you what they've managed to unearth so far.
Fossilised in time by the volcanic rock that tragically buried the city, wandering around the archaeological site of Herculaneum is just like stepping through an open-air history book. This bite-size tour will take you to and from the site in just one morning, with enough time to explore the historical relics on a guided walk.

You're not allowed to enter the site with rucksacks, handbags, luggage and any cases larger than 30 x 30 x 15cm. There are cloakrooms you can use free of charge
On the first Sunday of each month, entrance to archaeological sites are free of charge. This has already been deducted from the price on the relevant dates
Please note, the duration of this tour is around five hours, with a two-hour guided tour around the archaeological site
Official admission prices are €16 for adults, €2 for EU citizens aged 18–25, and free for children under 18, as well as for everyone on the first Sunday of each month. The price difference reflects the additional services included in the offer.

We enjoyed the tour and the guide was very good. The only issue was that the meeting point instructions could have been clearer. It says to meet at the info point but there was no info point when we went to look the evening before or on the day. It should say to meet at the meeting point by the sign. It was confusing.

Your guide was more interested in getting the job over with, and zoom around the ruins as quick as she could missing chucks out of the experience. The tour at the pick up point started, but descended into a 2 hour tour by coach of Sorrento because due pick ups from different hotels like was on the way back. The promised time of 45 min was cut short to 10min after a phone call asking where she was from the Pompeii site. Less than 90 minutes on site, not good enough. Big let down.

Overall the experience was good on the way to the site we had an extremely knowledgeable guide by the name on IOnka who was an absolute pleasure to listen too and passionate about her interest overall in this history and facts details etc however we were split into two parties on stringing at the site and we were guided by another guide who we felt not as experienced we felt rushed and had not the knoybase as IOnka I just wish we could have left our group and joined her group would have been bet

Lorenzo our guide was excellent. We were split into 2 groups for the visit which was great to have a small group. Traffic horrendous and took 1 hour to pick up all the tour participants in Sorrento. 4 hour tour took 6 hours because of pick ups & drop offs and traffic

The tour was too full so the tour was split between guide and local guide. We were with the local guide. We left the tour. Heavily accented commentary too hard to understand thro the audio loop. Yabber yabber about football and rock bands all magnified through the audio loop. It ruined a lifelong dream to visit for me to visit. Cancelled the tour to Pompeii & Vesuvius we had also booked. Huge disappointment.

The day was very hot but was tolerable so the tour length was just right. We appreciated the early start to avoid the heat of the day. The last part of the trip was to the ‘beach’ and although we knew what was there perhaps more focus should be given to the respect of that particular area of the site.. Excellent tour.

Our guide Fabianna added so much more to this excursion. Herculaneum is a must see visit to gain even more perspective of Roman life than visiting Pompeii alone. Yes it was hot (September) and tiring, but definitely worth the experience. The coaches are comfortable and there are some stunning views. We did this excursion and Pompeii on separate days. It would not have been enjoyable all on one day. You may consider it expensive, but the ongoing conservation is essential for generations to come.

De gids Eugenio heeft zijn groep goed begeleid. De uitleg ter plaatse was heel correct en boeiend gebracht. Er waren echter 2 mensen een half uur te laat op het uur van vertrek. Dit was niet de schuld van Eugenio en hij zat hiermee heel erg verveeld. Enkele mensen van onze bus moesten op de site mee met een andere groep, en zij waren te laat terug aan de bus. Ik had zo medelijden met Eugenio… top uitstap, wel duur via Tui als je ziet dat de ingang particulier 16€ kost.

After an excellent Pompeii and Vesuvius tour, we decided that we really should see Herculaneum. Sadly, it wasn’t quite so good. More than an hour after being collected from our hotel, we were still trundling around Sorrento, picking people up (later explained by our hotel rep as ‘TUI’s environmental policy’). Throughout the journey our guide pointed out all manner obvious things. Think junior school trip. At Herculaneum the tour was reasonably interesting. Perhaps we should have taken the train?

A fantastic introduction to Herculaneum.Our brilliant guide have us an in depth insight into the way the inhabitants of Herculaneum lived prior to the eruption and also of how the city evolved. The preservation of the city is amazing and is definitely worth a visit.

Initial guide who took us to Herculaneum was informative about the plan for the trip & our guide who took us around Herculaneum was excellent. His knowledge was outstanding as was his English language. Would highly recommend this trip. Only relative downside was collecting so many people en-route to Herculaneum. The journey back was under 1 hour whereas going was an extra 35-40 minutes

The guided tour was really good; informative and interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable of both Herculaneum and the region around Naples and Sorrento. I would have liked more time after the tour in the museum as it has a huge around of artefacts from the site which give an insight into the society at the time. The downside to the tour was the bus journey time, partly due to the number of pick-ups in Sorrento, which restricted the amount of time in Herculaneum itself.

Once at Herculaneum our group was split between 2 guides as it was so large. Luckily I was with a guide called Eugene, who seemed to speak English better than the guide who'd picked us up on the coach. Eugene was very knowledgeable about the site and considerate to the group. When we returned from our trip we were not dropped off at our original pick up point but in the centre of Sorrento and told by guide Antonio, this was because the road was closed to buses. Inconvenient and confusing.

Booking though Tui was very easy, however being one of the first pick ups we were on the coach almost 1 hour before leaving Sorrento. We were told the information to not take a ruck sack or large bag so we ended up carrying a water bottle around, but once there people had larger bags/rucksacks which would have made life easier. The tour was good and guide very informative.

We spent 2 full hours with the guide, staight off and baxknon to the coach, another hour to investigate on our own and have the chance to eat would have been useful, no down time at all during the visit.

The tour around the site was great and our guide was lovely. It was interesting and we really enjoyed exploring. It was the right amount of time for the tour, as any longer would have been too hot in the sun. The only thing that would have been ideal was if we had another 20 minutes or so after the tour on our own. We only had 15 minutes to use the toilets, look in the museum, go to the shop and get refreshments, which wasn't long enough, so we missed the shop and half the museum.

The guide was really well informed, and we learnt a lot about herculaneum but also a bit about pompei in comparisons. We also learnt about capri and other surrounding areas with regard to how eruptions have changed the land. It was very tiring towards the end, so it would have been nice to have a few seating areas or benches within the site, but that isn't the guides fault.

Excellent trip. Our guide Lorenzo was excellent! He showed us all Around the site and was very informative. Take plenty of water, SPF & fan. It’s so warm. Backpacks not permitted. Wear sturdy footwear. 2 adults & 2 teens really enjoyed it. I am glad we just did the half day. It was plenty for us in the heat. We were glad to get back for a dip in the pool!

We enjoyed our tour around Herculaneum. However the amount of time spent on the coach before arriving at Herculaneum made us wish we had visited independently. We were picked up at 7.45am (first pickup) and were still in Sorrento at 9.15am. We finally arrived at Herculaneum at 10.20am! If we had known this we would never had booked the trip.

The visit pick up time was before the formal breakfast start time at the hotel and as a coeliac who needs gluten free food that was awkward. The trip itself was excellent with a very knowledgeable guide who gave us a lot of helpful information on the way to the site and then guided us around the site brilliantly. Overall a very good trip well recommended.

This excursion is one that you should definitely think of doing. No stress, as we were picked up from the hotel and taken directly to Herculaneum. What you encounter is just amazing, and our guide Francesca was so informative, she definitely knew her history well. I must also congratulate the driver who transported us safely around.

Coach picked up from hotel, guide was efficient getting us on. Guide talked through the journey and what to expect. Handed out speakers so we could hear him. We had time for comfort break before start and end of tour. Water vending machines were only 1 euro which was good value. We enjoyed our guide Eugene I think he was called. Answered extra questions we had about the site. Great to see work being carried out. Side note, if hot go in the museum with artifacts to cool down

Staying at Solano Hotel it took nearly hour to pick up the full coach load before it left Sorrento. Dreadful! It was so hot that day and the guide could have found a few stops in the shade that were available. The guide did not direct overheated guests to the museum when they wanted to get out of the sun. We were then subjected to the reverse drop off journey . Never again !

Re safety and security: Pick up was from The Dui Golfi Grand Hotel the walk from the Villa Fernanda Hotel is partly down a busy road with no pavements and on this walk had a near miss with a motorcyclist, it is also not the advertised 10 minute walk, the pick up points for safety purposes I believe need to be reviewed. As for the tour the guide was friendly and knowledgeable and made the tour very interesting and pointed out a couple of points I had not known previously would recommend

The trip to Herculaneum was excellent, enhanced by the excellent guide we had for the excursion. He deserves much praise for the experience. Our experience was slightly diminished by the miscommunication to be picked up from a drop off point at a Church, for onward travel back to the hotel. This we communicated through the TUI app, at the time. The AI stand-in was poor and frustrating, at the time, and not at all a good replacement for the excellent and helpful - Rossana.

The bus pick up was about 20 minutes late due to the usual Sorrento traffic congestion but the guides on the bus and around Herculaneum (Ernesto? And Nancia) were both excellent. The (free) toilets we were guided to on arrival were disgusting. We discovered later at the end of the tour (which was exceptional) that there were lovely (free) toilets within the museum. Picking up x4 other parties from hotels around Sorrento, plus traffic, meant it took two hours to travel to Herculaneum.

The bus was prompt, clean & our guide was there to direct us. Our guide was superb. She gave information about each province we travelled through to get to destination. In Herculaneum she was fabulous. Explaining every aspect of Roman life the buildings & items found. She slowed our tour down to allow other groups to leave so we were able to enjoy our experience with just our small group of people. Really enjoyed the day & I think a lot of the credit for our experience was down to our guide!

We given specific instructions that our pickup was at the hotel. However, this was incorrect it should have been the bus station. The coach did eventual ly collect us from the hotel. The drive there and the tour was fine. Our return journey was not a good experience. The driver dropped us off at the bus station not the hotel and as we did not know how tho get back it turned out to a traumatic experience. Not helped by the coach driver sending us in the wrong direction.

Our pick up was a little late due to an earlier 'no show' at a previous hotel however, that was the only hiccup of the day. Our guide was excellent and very informative. She showed us around all the key areas of the site, apart from the port area, but with only 2 hours you are limited at what you can get to see. We much preferred Herculaneum to Pompeii, as it was less busy and seemed to have better preserved antiquities.

The bus that picked us up was about 20 minutes later than the pickup time. The guide was very knowledgeable and took us on a good tour, but sadly didn’t take us to see the casts of the people who had been caught in the eruption which is what I really wanted to see. A little free time would have enabled people to have a quick look around at things they might have wanted to see. When we got back on the bus the only seats at the back were not really fit for purpose only room for children.

Queuing to get into the Herculaneum site was a little stressful and info on who was going in each group wasn’t shared beforehand. Specific details of what was to happen at the end of the tour was also rather vague, as were the instructions/directions for how to get back to the coach; some of this is attributable to the site, as the coach park is not well signposted. It was a relatively warm day, but there was no real opportunity for obtaining refreshments; again this may be down to the site.

I appreciated that we were given time to use the toilets as soon as we arrived. Before thevtour started. We were split into 2 groups which was also a good idea. The worst part is the traffic and it ended up an extra hour on the Sunday to get back to the hotel. The driver was amazing trying to avoid the worst and cutting through streets.

appalling tui organisation. on the return to Sorrento -it took over 1 hour to drop us off AFTER reaching Sorrento. Had a 1 hour trip around the area dropping people off at 8 different hotels over a wide area. Failure of tour rep at hotel to warn of this although we are now aware of previous complaints at our hotel the Bristol on this very issue.

The Italian guide was very personable and knowledgeable. She was friendly and informative throughout. The site was very interesting to tour and not overwhelming in size. It was a long, very slow journey back so people need to be made aware of the ongoing traffic problems in that area before they book. Over achieved on all fronts! Transfers from our hotel to the tour was comfortable and safe, our guide gave us facts about the local area which was a nice bonus! The tour itself was at a nice informative, relaxed and very structured pace which made what can be an information overload very pleasant. I’d recommend taking this tour over Pompei as it is a lot more personal and you are able to be closer in a site in the smaller surroundings.

Also it would be nice if there had been a planned break for coffee/drinks. It was a long journey with all the pick ups, perhaps splitting to two smaller buses may have been better than one. Very good guide and Herculaneum itself is very impressive. Would have liked to have longer time there to explore some of the areas not visited with the guide. The coach journey to Herculaneum was disappointing - we were the 1st to board the coach and then the coach went to other hotels picking up passengers around the Sorrentine peninsula and after 1 hour of picking other passengers up we were back going through the village we were picked up from! We should have been picked up then

Enjoyed the visit very much. However, it took ages to get there, not because it was so far, but we had to pick up so many people around Sorrento from so many different Hotels. We were in the coach for over an hour before we left Sorrento itself. The actual guide around was good but lasted under the two hours. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time for some self exploring, so felt I’d missed quite a bit. Then of course there were the drop offs on the way back. Otherwise very good. Herculaneum ++

Toyed between the idea of doing this ourselves for 5 euro on the train from Sorrento to Ercolani. Rep said there would be lots of queuing and not reliable transport so we booked the half day trip. Spent the first hour of the trip driving around sorrento in and out if the coach park waiting for people to turn up! The guide was good and very informative but it would have also been nice to have had an hour or 2 to explore herculaneum ourselves as it felt very rushed! We didn't see all of the town

Experience was great with very knowledgeable guide, extremely interesting, loved the headphones. Thought it was expensive, I would imagine it would be too costly for a family as only a couple of hours. Going back to our hotel took ages as one group asked to be dropped back at their hotel instead of the drop off point so they didn’t miss lunch which meant the rest of the coach had a much longer journey back.

This was the best tour of our holiday. The guide was great. She was extremely informative, making the tour very interesting from beginning to end. The tour wasn't rushed so we got time to appreciate what we were being shown and told. The only thing I would have appreciated was perhaps a little longer free time at the end in order to be able to look in the museum as well.

Ernesto was an excellent guide, full of information which was delivered in an engaging way with lots of little asides. The time passed so quickly and we learnt so much about the area. It was a pity that it wasn't a half hour longer so that we could have spent more time in the museum. Oswald, the driver was also part of this team negotiating tricky bend, weaving around stationary cars and avoiding the incredible nightmare drivers. Loved the whole experience.

We were disappointed with this tour, far too rushed with almost no time to really take in Herculaneum. We were rushed through the tour and at times it was hard to keep up with the guide who barely gave us any opportunity to ask questions or take a photo. We barely had an an hour and a half tour, with 30 minutes tacked on to the end to visit the museum, use toilets and get back to the coach. Overall very poor value for money, certainly wouldn’t recommend this particular tour.

Extremely knowledgeable guide - she was excellent. Tour was about the right length and very informative. I saw many reviews complaining about how long it took to collect from all the other hotels. It's such impressive scenery on the way and way back - just relax and enjoy it! Herculaneum is a great choice for a trip and good value - I was recommended by a friend, who had been there (and to Pompei) - he said, if you only have time to do one, pick Herculaneum. We did and were not disappointed.

This was the best trip we went on during our stay in Sorrento. Lello our guide was excellent and has an excellent sense of humour. He really knew his stuff and made the tour both interesting and entertaining. This trip is excellent value for money and I would recommend it to anyone. We didn't go to Pompei, but it can't have been better than Herculaeum!

Rep on the coach was good, very cheerful and okay English for the ride, but I'm glad we had Yanis as our onside guide as she was very well informed and her English much better. It was great that there was some time to visit the museum at the end but it would have been good to have time to visit the shop even if for just 5 minutes. We had to rush back to the coach and that was awkward for the people who wanted to use the bathroom. Needs another 30 minutes I think.

The length of the guided tour was about right, saw a lot of different buildings and artefacts. However this ran over the time allocated and we only had 6 minutes to go into the museum before the coach left so this was very very disappointing as the guide mentioned going to see the artefacts on display all the way round.. The tour was very interesting but not enough time was given to explore on our own afterwards. We had time to take a quick look around the museum but didn’t get to see the replica skeletons we wanted to see. The guide was really nice but we felt he was lacking on information during the drive to the destination (which our guide today on a different trip managed to do extremely well). Enjoyed the convenience of being picked up and dropped off at the hotel. The guide was very knowledgeable not just about Herculaneum but also provided us with lots of information about the area on the bus trip there

Great trip. Herculaneum is superior to Pompei in my view. It has better preserved buildings, much smaller and less crowded. We were able to see the majority of the site and the small on-site museum. Our guide Ernesto was very knowledgable which very much added to our enjoyment.

Herculaneum is another must do trip if you’re staying in Sorrento. Much smaller than Pompeii but still fascinating. It gives you a good idea what things would have looked like, as a lot of the buildings have be reconstructed, which is great if you go on to Pompeii. Our tour guide Laura was excellent, helpful and informative. Ideally we’d have liked a bit more time to explore on our own, but in fairness 30 degree heat makes walking a bit challenging so a half day is just about enough.

Fabulous half day trip, was very hot but plenty of shade as we went around, Fabi was our guide, very knowledgeable. She spoke about all the areas of sorento as we got the bus there. Definitely recommend

It was great, getting the bus to start with was a bit confusing as there was no one there to tell you where to go and lots of buses and mini busses coming in and out. Coach driver was good as was the guide, not too rushed and time to look around on your own was appreciated.

A fabulous tour. Herculaneum is amazing and our guide was excellent - best so far. But I wish TUI would listen to feedback and allow half guided and half free time for people to explore on their own. Shame - I would have liked just to wander through it. But well worth doing.

Excellent tour - the guide was amazing and her passion and enthusiasm for the tour definitely added to the whole experience. We left with an appreciation and understanding of not only the excavation process and structure of the city but also of the way of life of those who lived there. We plan to return to the area in the future and, as a result of this experience, will most definitely look to booking further tours.

Overall a fantastic experience. Professional and very knowledgeable guide who was very well organised. A good amount of time was spent in the Herculaneum with the guide which was good. The only downside, we only had a half an hour at the end of the tour for free time to explore any other areas. I’m my opinion this could do with being a little longer maybe an hour to an hour and a half. Chance to look at other areas not covered in the tour without having to rush.

We felt a little rushed at the end, given only 10 minutes of free time which wasn’t enough to visit the museum, go to the loo and the shop and look at anything that hadn’t been included on the tour. It would have been good to have 30-45 minutes to do any extra things we wanted before we left

The guide was very knowledgeable and interesting, he seemed to have real interest in the subject matter. Herculaneum we found nice and peaceful so able to get around, and see it with the big crowds you have at Pompeii. Pick up was on time, bus comfortable.

A great tour which was highly informative but for me somewhat spoilt by the guide consistently adding “you won’t see that at Pompeii” This is an entirely unnecessary comment as both sites are completely different and people shouldn’t be negatively influenced .

Lucky to have a knowledgeable guide. Selection of key sights which provided a good overview of the site. Morning trip meant we missed intense heat which would have spoiled experience. Thoroughly enjoyable and informative
