Puerto Viejo and Cahuita are two laidback towns on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast, nestled in the Limon Province. With a 20-minute drive separating the two towns, it’s easy to explore both in a single morning or afternoon. 1. Visit Cahuita National Park

Cahuita National Park is known for its tropical rainforest, white-sand beaches and vibrant coral reefs. Featuring a flat, easy-to-walk trail that stretches five kilometres along the coast, it’s ideal for anyone with a pair of walking shoes to go for a relaxing stroll. As you wander through the park, you’ll likely spot wildlife like capuchin monkeys, iguanas and sloths in their natural habitat. The reefs are home to colourful fish, sea urchins and the occasional sea turtle, so it’s a great spot for snorkelling. Puerto Viejo is a foodie’s delight, especially if you love Afro-Caribbean flavours. You can find traditional dishes like rice and beans, fresh seafood and hearty Caribbean-style stews. In contrast, Cahuita has a more low-key food scene, with family-run eateries and seaside shacks offering freshly caught fish, coconut-infused curries and simple home-cooked flavours in a relaxed coastal setting.

3. Surf and unwind with some beach time in Puerto Viejo

If surfing’s your thing, Puerto Viejo is the place to be. Home to Salsa Brava, Costa Rica’s most renowned and challenging surf break, it’s a must-try for adrenaline junkies. For a gentler experience, you can head to Playa Cocles, where consistent waves, surf schools and board rentals make it perfect for complete beginners and pros alike.
